6.4L diesel question
All b.s.'ing aside. What would it take to make a 6.4 reliable. What to replace BEFORE it breaks. I don't want a daily driver but need something to haul with and I can get a low milage 2008 F350 really cheap. Someone bought the truck and now can't afford the payment. It only has @ 40,000 miles and has had nothing mechanically gone wrong.....so far. How much money we talkin here? I would only drive the truck 10-15,000 miles per year.

Re: 6.4L diesel question
all bs aside, find something else..............terrible engine.
edit; it looks like it still has warranty, the radiator wont be covered under it though. When that fails its a 1000 bucks give or take. The rest of the failures that will happen should be covered but keep good records of oil and fuel filter changes..................very important you do as Ford will damn sure try and weasel out of it if you dont. The other factor is most major failures that are prone to happen the cab is comin off. When its out oif warranty keep a spare hp pump, injector, shortbloack assy etc etc on hand you will be fine.
My opinion of them is very low, its too bad because the rest of the truck (exception of the radiator design) is awesome...............but that powerplant they use is terrible. One might help things with a DPF delete, but doing so requires a programmer and thus can void warranty if the dealership wants to be a dick.
IMO its a big gamble, they have issues, serious issues.

Mine has 118,000 miles on it. It's had some issues but nothing internal.
If I were you I'd buy a nice 7.3 and be done with it...

Re: 6.4L diesel question
granted the 6.4 has its problems but so do all new diesels. i have seen even new cummins fail ALOT. But as far as making the 6.4 reliable delete the after treatment and make sure you service it regularly. almost 90 precent ofr 6.4's that i saw getting new longblocks was due to lack of service.

Is this truck you're thinking of buying a dually or a single wheel?

Re: 6.4L diesel question
The deal is I don't NEED this truck. I't wouldn't be a daily driver but it is a really nice truck.....except for the 6.4 I only tow my enclosed trailer. The 5.4 f150 I have does OK. My father in law has a car dealership and I want to get into that somewhat. I want to take an open trailer to pick up cars/trucks and some of them can be pretty far away. I would LOVE a new f250 with the big gas engine but damn I just won't pay that for a new truck right now. U want my 2006 F150 FX4?
