work truck gas vs diesel
i go back and forth on this topic
witch is a better for daily driver and trailer puller
i had both a 86 f350 with a 6.9 with ats turbo i liked it but the upkeep cost was
a bit more than i wanted i sold it and decided to keep my
97 crewcab f350 with a 460 in it
power wise it seemed about the same
gas milage sucks but the upkeep cost isnt as much and fuel is cheaper
and i feel there is more potental and upgrade for the 460 and i can work on it
just woneding what others think

Re: work truck gas vs diesel
My '91 6" lifted F250 7.5/460 with 3:55 gears and 33" tires has almost 900K on it. I had a burnt #5 exhaust valve so we did both heads. The truck has been great, no major problems. I also have a '94 and it is a pig, but it has 4:11 gears and shorter tires. It is funny my cusin has gone through 3 diesel trucks.
Re: work truck gas vs diesel
You buy a diesel because you want to not because it makes financial sense. If you are strapped for cash the gas will always be cheaper.
Cons:
Fuel is cheaper,
maintenance is cheap,
repair cost are waaaaaay cheaper
initial cost is considerably more
Pros:
Awesome torque
better fuel mileage
longevity as the previous poster noted. I never keep my trucks for that many miles so I don't take that into account.
I used to buy a new work vehicle every two years and every time I put a calculator to it the diesel was considerably more expensive. Now if you can afford the extra expense it is worth every penny when pulling a trailer. The gobs of torque that turbo makes is awesome.
