Re: 4x4 front axle swap question
OK let me see if I can answer a few of these for you:
1: generally the 60 front are a little wider than the 44 but a very small amount maybe an extra inch on each side if i were to guess
2: The frames are wider on the 90's model truck moving the sping pads further apart on the axle.
3: The passenger side pad would not be a proble to move but the drivers side on the 70's truck is somwhat integrated into the hog head you might be able to change the 90's front but it will take some serious work.
4: after all else is converted use the cross over style sterring form a 78/79 f-150 or f-250.

Re: 4x4 front axle swap question
Wooo wooo, I finally get to answer a question where I actually know the answer. Pay not attention to the sig.
1- Going from a D44hd to a 79 kp D60 in my 79 F250 I noticed my front was about 2" wider. Just wide enough to piss me off with the fenders on my trailer.
2 and 3- Like lghtning said the frames are wider on the 80-up F250/350s Its actually quite a bit wider. To fix this you will need to completely outboard your driver side spring hangers. Its not impossible but it is quite a bit of work. The cost of the later axles are usually much cheaper than the 78-79 kingpin axles so sometimes its worth it. I know a guy who has done it and I will put you in contact with him if you are interested.
4- I have a good step by step write up on crossover steering. Id be happy to share if you are interested.

Re: 4x4 front axle swap question
I think fixing the 44 will be alot easier than putting the late model 60 under it. It's probably just a pinion bearing on the 44. Have you checked the pinion nut to see if it was tight?

I would use a 78/79 ps box as well as crossover. Faaaaaaar less bump steer.

Re: 4x4 front axle swap question
When I swapped the dana 60 in, I also did the crossover steering. It works a lot better, especially with larger tires. I would recommend doing it along with the power steering gearbox. Chris
