Grudge Race........
So..... I have this buddy with a stage1 455 in a 72 Electra convertible looking to talk some smack and wanting a piece of my 66 merc......
The merc is currently a pretty wimpy 390 2v cruiser....... But....... But I have a 428 and a new C6 waiting to go in...... Any ideas on how to whoop on a Buick land yacht with a mercury land yacht?
Suggestions please.... Let's have some fun.... What do you think it gonna take to open a can of whoop ass on him?

Dave,
A '72 Electra convertible is a full size car,,,,,and they were big, long and heavy back then. It probably weighs around 5200 lbs with the power windows, power seats, a/c, cruise control, and all those other options. You should be able to beat him with your 390 2 V.

He's the one pickin the fight.......LOL
It's been heavily modified...... Duane and Keith have been into it....... Its rolling at least 13.0 probably mid to upper 12's by the time I get this thing done.. The merc is probably 4200 +\- and if it's doing a 15.0 it would be lucky with the 390.

Re: Grudge Race........
Dave I really fail to see a problem beating the buick. I don't know what ya all got in the 428 for parts but id think mid twelves should be quite easy since my truck runs times in that range with a pump gas 390, 3.70 gears, and the areo package of a barn door. GetERDone...

Re: Grudge Race........
Any opinions on gearing and tires to run?
I'm thinking some 3.50 or 3.89's and if I can get a decent sticky 14 tire to fit the American wheels on thecar now.

If you're not concerned with cruisin' on the highway or mileage then put a big ratio rear gear in it.
Re: Grudge Race........
Had it on the pump a few days ago.... Ended up having a bad freaking hydraulic lifter......
Switching to a custom mechanical flat tappet..... will get it back on the pump ASAP........ BLA !!!!

Re: Grudge Race........
I had a 428 that I put in my 67 mustang fastback years ago. It was an original 390 GTA car, but I was young at the time and blew up the 390--so I replaced it with a 428. Ran 10.70s back in 1994.
I think to go up against that highly modified stage 1 455 Buick, you are going to need some pretty aggressive gearing and a good tire to start. I used to run 3.89s with a 28 tall slick, standard 2.46 1st gear in the c6. Could only 60' in the 1.5s and the car was pretty light (3200lbs).
I am assuming the 428 is already built (as pictured?). To make an FE run strong you really need a good cylinder head, go with a solid lifter cam minimum, or just throw the bottle on it. Hopefully you have a good shaft rocker arm setup, I always had some reliability issues with the stock rocker arms once I went with a solid lifter cam until I went with the Comp Cams set up.
Here is a link to the edelbrock RPM heads---check out the flow numbers on the bottom--which illustrates exactly why I went with the 385 series motor instead on my swap. The FE (especially the cylinder head design) is just too dated. Compare those flow numbers to a stock set of Kaase P51s for the 385 series motor.

Re: Grudge Race........
I ported these C4AE-G castings and added CAj sized valves and the are flowing about like the eddies. I agree a 385 based engine would be a lot faster but the FE belongs in the car and looks right, if he gets me I'll build a genesis block 500+ and throw on some real heads!
