Had a little excitement this afternoon......
Actually, it's still goin' on...
About 3:00 pm today, we noticed a small fire burning in the foothills a little SW of my house. By 5:00 pm, it got blown up bad by 30+ mph winds and turned into this:
After about 15 min at my friend's house we saw this house get consumed by the fire.
This is the house next door to the one above. The fire crews and helicopters were able to save this one.
Got a couple good pics of the hero's at work...
As far as I know, nobody was injured. This fire covered about 15-20 sq. miles in only a couple of hours. The only thing that slowed it down was alot of prayer, IMO. The wind was blowing about 30 mph from the SE, and the whole time I was praying to myself that we absolutely have to have a wind change or this thing is gonna get real crazy, real fast. After about 30-40 min. the wind literally switched from SE, to straight north. Now, tell me that prayer doesn't work...
Here's a couple shots from my house just at dark, and just after dark. I live about 2 miles from where it was...

Thanks Rick. The pics are really good considering I took them with my phone, and as you can see, some of them through a spotting scope that my friend has. The news this morning said 3 homes and numerous outbuildings wer lost. No injuries reported as of yet...

Mother Nature...
Just when "MAN" thinks he is "KING SHIT!"
She puts him back in his place.
She can be beautiful, and yet very UGLY!

Re: Had a little excitement this afternoon......
Just a little update on the fire. Yesterday morning, the winds picked up to 30-35 mph with gusts of up to 60+ mph re-igniting the fire, causing it to grow from 700 acres Monday night to over 1400 yesterday, and pushing it back to the north/northwest causing further evacuations of more than 200 homes. Including my niece, and 3 of the guys I work with at Carquest. One of which is also my cousin. The burning house I posted a pictuer of above, belongs to an aquaintence of mine. He's a Korean War veteran, and is one of the best body men I've ever seen. The neighboring house with the burning outbuilding, mini van, and camper is also a friend of mine. All in all they lost 4 houses in the fire. One belongs to a gal that's deployed in Afghanistan. Her husband and kids had to fly to California to attend his mother's funeral, and they don't even know of the fire yet. Man, when life deals you lemons huh...? The upside is there has been no injuries so far from the fire.

the whole state of Colorado is gona burn up....................we dealt with that crap last year................when you see smoke in the air in the direction of your house you get a sick feeling in your stomach. I'm glad we got all the rain we did over the winter and spring, we were in a drought comparable to the dust bowl, as of now we are drought free......................but temps will be close to 110 for at least a week here, maybe longer...............

Re: Had a little excitement this afternoon......
It sure is Jon. My sister-in-law lives near Colorado Springs, and she called this morning saying it's as bad as she's ever seen it. She's got a couple youngsters too and she's pretty scared about the whole thing... There's alot of people here that have NO clue about these fires. There was a customer that came into Carquest yesterday and said, I don't know what the problem is, they need to just put the fires out!! REALLY!!!??? He said if he lived up there and his house burnt, he'd be suing them for not putting it out before it got to his place... I asked him if he's ever been on a fireline. Guess what his answer was... I told him I just happened to have a little experience in the field; I was on the famous Elkhorn Fire back in '88, and came just 1 pick away from going to Yellowstone National Park the same year. After I explained to him just how fun it really is, his attitude changed a little for the better. I explained to him what it was like to have a fire turn on you in an instant, and what it's like to deploy a fire blanket with just seconds to spare to keep from getting cooked like a 180# meatloaf!!! If any of you get the chance, you should really try it out... You think drag racing is a rush!!! It's amazing what that little piece of tin foil can do...
Like Adam said, Just when Man thinks he's king of the heap, along comes "Mother Nature" and proves him wrong. Yes, the fires are truly an awesome spectacle! One to be reckoned with if it's not given the respect it deserves...

The Fire fighters are a special breed for sure. They don't get the credit and respect they deserve. I helped fight a small out of control forest fire a few years back and it was tough.
