Chuck,
Thanks for posting the pictures for the people that couldn't make it to the Bash. The cars coming along good,i kind of like the blue and the yellow.Maybe you could come up with a nice Blue and Yellow paint scheme. Are you and Damon going to make the Columbus NMRA Race again this year?
Later Mark.

Great job!
Hi Chuck-
Just wanted to say that's a great job you're doing there.
Looks like a real Pro Job.
I was wondering if you know how many feet of tubing you used for the project, or did you buy a pre-bent kit?
How much was the tubing per foot?
I'm currently doing the research to find out if it's better to just buy a prebent kit (~$1500.00) from chassis engineering, because they are just down the road from me, or buy the straight tubing and bend myself. Got to buy the bender too, so that's an added expense. C/E charges $4.60/ft for 1 5/8 x .134 M/S tubing.
I saw another site where the feet of tubing is around 400 ft. to do a chassis. Does this sound close to what you did?
Also did you use other diameter tubing in the build?
Sorry for all the questions, but I've been following your project with much enthusiasm and would like to try redoing my carr too!
good luck with your shakedown runs!
Shawn

Re: Chuck's 1970 Mustang: The Rebuild...
Shawn, I am about ready to re-do my 65 Fairlane. Check out Alstonracing.com...they quoted me $1090 shipped for their prolink chassis. If I go with their kit it will be the progas kit, with round tube, ladders, and struts. I have the bender, and welders...mig and access to tig. I am going with 36" ladder bars (alston sells 32")...this is why I am leaning to building my own....main chassis should be 1 5/8

Re: Chuck's 1970 Mustang: The Rebuild...
thanks Tbolt
That's about where I'm at with it, but at C/E cost of 4.60 ft, that would add up pretty quick
Just wanted to nail down some of the costs to make a good choice, either build from scratch (Cost of bender, straight tubing, notcher etc.) or just use the money for the bender to buy the prebent kit from C/E for around $1500.00 I can pick up, so no freight. Down side to this is it wouldn't be custom fit to the car.
I already have a welder thats up to the task.
Decisions, decisions....

Re: Chuck's 1970 Mustang: The Rebuild...
the tubing here is also 4.60 per foot...I am looking at about 570 with tax....that is about 110 feet of 1 5/8 ms. that is just for the main bars...not including the second part of the door X and all other small bars.

Re: Chuck's 1970 Mustang: The Rebuild...
Required tubing OD size & wall thickness for A mild steel door car really depends on how fast you want to go.
To be NHRA/IHRA "rule book legal" for an 8.50 & slower door car, most of the ms required "must have to be legal" cage bars will need to be a minimum of .118" thick (in various diameters). But if you step up to the faster door car SFI specs for ms (8.49 to 7.50), only the 1-5/8 OD tubing has to be a minimum of .118" thick. For all the rest of the required tubing used that is 1-1/2 OD & smaller, SFI allows you to use thinner wall tubing (minimum .108" thick).
So for example take a mild steel SFI legal full chassis car's main inner frame rails in the driver area. You don't have to use 1-5/8 OD x .118" wall (.120 DOM or .134 HREW) if you don't want to because SFI allows you to use smaller/thinner tubing (1-1/2 OD x .108 wall) for the main inner frame rails in the driver compartment.
Just depends on which way you want to go. SFI ms "legal" requires more bars, but you get to use thinner tubing on a number of the bars. NHRA/IHRA ms "rule book legal" requires less total bars, but they are all at the thicker wall.

Thanks for the clarification, I suspected that the min. regs. I.E. 1 5/8" .118 was for the main structural cage, but wasn't clear on all other tubing.
I'm going to jump back over to my other post to continue this, sorry Chuck for imosing on your project post, just got a little too enthused!

Re: Chuck's 1970 Mustang: The Rebuild...
Funny you should ask. I just left Bill and Chuck at the shop, had to get Logan & Tracy home.
Bill helped me do a little wiring at the shop for a 30 amp RV Receptacle and help Chuck with "The Project". When I left, the front end was on the ground and they were working on the rear suspension.
Looking pretty SWEET I may add
Bill,
Thanks for helping with the wiring, I owe you one buddy

Yeah Damon. You should know by now, that stories on here are no good without pics. It's good to hear Chuck's keepin' after it. Hope he gets it to the track before the season's out.
