I agree w/Dave that we need more info, but a 1000cfm Dominator is what is mostly used successfully.

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
Several years ago, I raced the 514" Ranger with an 1150 Dominator. When I swapped on a friend's 1050, the truck slowed almost 2 tenths. I suppose it coulda been the carb tune, but the 1050 ran real good on my buddy's 500" Chevy. How high are you gonna spin this thing?

Wouldn't a 1000 cfm be to much for street use ?

I run a HP1000 on a little 466" on the street and it works well.

I don't think he told us if it was a street deal or not. His avatar shows him next to a racecar, tho...

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
Ideal carb for a 514 spinning 7500 RPM for drag racing would be 1300 CFM.
Same engine for street use, and 7500 RPM peak, looking at 1100 cfm
Bring the peak RPM down to 6000, 1050 domi for drag racing. Or a 950 for the street.

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
my 466 pumpgas street motor will have a 1050 dominator on it.
my 306" sbf race motor has a 950
my 563" bbf race motor has a 1450
Id go with an 1150 or even a 1250 if this is a lightweight racecar deal.......

Agree, IF someone has the knowledge, patients, and dollars, bigger is better. They are a bit of a challenge to tune though.
Ive gotten 950HPs to work great on many 350 cu in combinations.
The average bolt it on and forget it guy, isn't going to love a carb designed to keep WOT vaccuum at .5" or damn close. He's going to want that 13" vaccuum combination that never takes a jet change or adjustment.

[/quote my car is a full blown race car, it is a 12 & 1/2 to one, it has a 709 cam , it has a 1250 QF on it now, it has super Cobrajet heads and much more, it runs good like it is, but i was wondering if i was holding it back by the way it is set up.

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
Years ago a friend had a 289 drag car, started with a 735, then a 850DP, then tried a 1050 dominator. The 1050 Dom was the fastest. Everyone said it would be too much, including me, but that little 289 like it.

Steve it's funny how that seems to be, when it seems to big then it's just right... I am wondering what a 289 would do with 2 1050s on it? I know they like 2 660s, I might just have to build an engine to test this...

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
I ran a 1150 on my 466 and it took every bit I could give it. The plan for the 488 is to break it in with the 1150 on the dyno then try a 1250 and see what makes the most power.

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
I agree w/ya'll on most of this thread. My ole Maverick was a 466 w/Ported DoveC's w/big compression and big roller (for 466). I went from a 1050 to a 1150 and it came alive. But it has a lot to do w/whats inside the engine imo.

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
For a set-up drag car a 1250 dominator or bigger, for a real street car with a 10:1 514, street gearing and a real tight convertor, I'd be looking a a 950 or 1000 4150 for crushing and good performance.

Re: carbs for 514 ci motor
I have yet to install an 1150 (or larger) carb on any decent race engine over 450CI and not see a performance improvement. For the street I go with a 2 circuit dominator.
