Spool the 9" and leave the 44 open.

Depends on what you are running and what type of track. I recommend a spool for the rear and a trac loc up front. The high HP guys with the suspension to carry the front will say open, they generally do not use the front much, the rest of us need all the traction we can get and the trac loc helps while offering forgiveness as not to break too many parts.

X2 In my experience the track loc was very forgiving

Re: whats better for mud racing?
I had a spool rear and open front for awhile in my nmro class 1B truck. Later on I welded the front and never looked back.
I would spool both if you have the funds. It's hard to steer but pulls all 4 tires 100%.

If it's mud only, spool the front and rear. The stock front carrier is a grenade waiting to go boom.

I certainly dont have the power to carry the front but leave the front open, i ran a welded front a time or 3...... wont ever do that again.

Re: whats better for mud racing?
It is a consensus from almost everyone to "spool" the rear but, from several customers of mine, it depends a lot about the depth of the mud on the track or the power level for the better front unit.
The high horsepower guys all seem to use a Dana 50 up front instead of a 44 and like the "Tru-Track" or "Detroit Locker" differential to keep things together. The guys with bucks seem to like the "Gleason" up front.
I don't really know how good this information is but, this is what I am told.

I agree with what Randy and a couple others have said, getting a spool for the rear should be a given, but the front does present some options.
The question to answer first it, are you running a timed, shallow pit or drag, or are you in a deep bog?
If you are running a shallow deal, I'd just leave the front open. My bronco had a trak lock up front, great for hillclimbs and such, but on the flat tracks, you better be lined up arrow straight or the front end had a tendency to "pull" the truck where ever it wanted to go.
If you are running a bog type of deal, locker or even a spool, and just remember to unlock the hubs around the pit area and driving around the house. Leaving the front locked makes it a bugger to turn and stuff, can be a real pain.
Hope that helps some.

Re: whats better for mud racing?
Gearing can make a huge difference in how a front locker/spool setup will work for you. I had an open front in my Street Stock and Super Stock, and it worked fine, but I did notice at a few races that my front wasn't doing as much as it should have. When I switched to a Modified, I ran an open front for a few races, and noticed that the spider gears were cracked, and it was about to scatter. I put a spool in it, and never looked back. I run smaller tires in the front, and have a small amout of "overdrive" with the front gear, and I believe that is what helps the steering issue. If you are running the same size tire front and rear, use the next lower gear in the front to make sure the front is pulling faster than the rear is pushing so the truck will stay straight on it's own. Another trick you can use to get a little overdrive in the front is run a lower tire pressure in the back than the front, or use different width wheels front to back. When I was running 33's, I ran a wider set of wheels in the back than the front to get a little stagger, and then ran 6 psi in the rear and 20 psi in the fronts. Worked quite well for me.

Re: whats better for mud racing?
My experience in deep bog pits, shallow pits, and hill and hole pits have all led me to know that to be fast and go straight with or without big horsepower is to spool the rear and leave the front open. I've got a wall of shame with quite a few broken axle shaft pieces (both stock and chromoly) from my d44 while running a welded front for a bit, then a spool, then a trac loc, and haven't broken any since I went back to the open diff with chromoly shafts and upgraded joints.
As Momma said, " spooled front axles are the debil!!"

Any thing but a open in the front will result in broken parts, and make it hard to drive.

Get a spool, cheaper and better. Call Quick Performance, they know their stuff when it comes to differetial parts.
