Can anyone spot the mistake in this article?

Re: 429 SCJ Build/Dyno
They got the part about the 4 bolt main blocks all screwed up. Said D9 truck blocks were 4 bolt main. Said all the blocks had thick main webs, etc.
They also said the CJ iron heads had 2.190" diameter intake valves. That's wrong, they had 2.245" diameter.

That may be true, but read it again closely and there is even more. It took me a double take to catch it also.

Good God. With all of the mistakes I almost wonder if it was intentional. How about a writer who knows WTF he's talking about?

I thought you could get either a 428CJ OR a 429 CJ as early as '69 along with the Boss. The article said the wedge heads were introduced in '71

X2 ... Jim Smart is rather ignorant and not so intelligent about the Ford.
Re: 429 SCJ Build/Dyno
Well in one of the pictures his CJ heads have titanium retainers and in another one they have steel factory retainers if that's what you mean. The Pertronix distributor has a male spark plug style cap and it looks all wrong from a restoration stand point.

Grubbs is the same shop Jeff Smith always used for the questionable 460 builds in other mags.

No, the CobraJet 370 Hp non ram air all came with the Rochester Q Jet. Those carbs were commonly rated at 750 cfm. I have one here and I wish I had more. The CobraJet 375 Hp Ram Air came with the Holley 3610? or 3710?, my memory is fading. Also, the early 429-460 engines were internally balanced, it was the '77 and up engines that were externally balanced and had the tomahawk spacer.

Re: 429 SCJ Build/Dyno
Is it The fact that all SCJ's came with a solid lifter cam not a hydraulic lifter cam? Or that the four bolt main caps don't look like factory??? Just guesses

I don't remember that there was EVER a 429 which came externally balanced; only later 460's.
As far as I know and already said, the QuadraJet was factory OEM with the CJ engine ... the SCJ came with the Holley.
Re: 429 SCJ Build/Dyno
WINNER .024" on the feeler guage, and article lists that a hydraulic cam is used. WINNER JeffGFG 429SCJ was mechanically cammed.17. Valve lash is adjusted per the firing order at .022-.024-inch cold. You want the valve seated so it has just closed. The valve stem and rocker tip should be coated with engine oil, which also applies to clearanceschmitty wrote:I have never personally set a hydro cam to 20 thou lash.

Re: 429 SCJ Build/Dyno
The article does have alot of good information. I think they should have listed the cam spec.'s and proof read the article better. They more than likely picked up alot of HP from the head porting, electronic ingintion, roller rockers, HP Holley, and better coil, which they did mention in the article. If they would have mentioned this in a different way, instead of alluding to this as what the factory engines made (425-450HP) it would have been better in my view.GT300TD wrote:
