So what is the plan? Wait till January when the track schedules are out? There has got to be a way to get the track/date sooner then that, no?

I have ran into a couple of the larger tracks that would not schedule until Jan based on the major events not being scheduled till then---but I thought most here were wanting it at a smaller track due to costs and such.

Most tracks want a deposit to even think about it and completely paid in advance for a concrete scheduled date; (still subject to change). ... are you putting up the money...?

I have called in the past. It varies greatly by track, and the deposit also varies greatly. I have done it with $1500 to hold the date with the balance due (by agreement) XX number of days before the event. But I didn't have to pay the whole thing up front just to get on the calendar. It does change from track to track though. What we did in the past is yes, one person would put up the deposit. Then we would start a "sign up list" and spread it across different message boards, with typically everyones $$ due 30 days before the event (deadline) and at that point no one could cancel either. Of course there were people that paid several months in advance who could cancel and get their money back--so long as it was at least 30 days before the event. After that, no refunds.

it varies greatly, depending on the track. Can be as little as a few thousand to $20k +

Also dates will dictate the price, you want a busy weekend expect to pay.......
