cam change what to expect
gentlemen, tired of high 12s want low 12s.
..... edelbrock rpm heads 75 cc, torker ii intake, proform 850 street carb, shorty headers, 327 gears with 26 tall tires. two ton pistons 5 in the hole,
.....cam is a wuss cam 213 219 520 lift. gonna try a 274 voodoo cam. I believe it is 227 230 and 560ish lift. I need enough vacuum for power brakes. ability to drive around minn wisc etc is important to me. will the cam change get it done? thanks bobn

Bob you can always get a electric vacuum pump to run the power brakes we ordered one for the guy I work with for his 82 Volvo he said it works fine. Just something to think about for a option

I don't think you will ever, EVER, get more than the half a second improvement in E.T. you are seeking from just a camshaft change.
Unless you are talking about going from 19.10 seconds to about 18.20.
Re: cam change what to expect
okay, more gear and not that much over a cam change. thanks gents. 12.8 at 108 brainerd like clockwork. 12.5s would be decent enough for a street cruiser.
there is absolutely no track prep on street car night. most of the new stangs, Camaros and mopars are running low 13s. the vettes and caddys high 12s. mufflers and drs. absolutely no slicks either.
///just looking to stay ahead of most of them..... thanks again for replies, bobn

http://edelbrock.com/automotive/mc/camshafts/ford-bb.shtml Just a thought. Edelbrock claims 500HP with their Performer RPM cam. You will probably need more gear, and maybe convertor, depending on what you have now.

Something like a Davis traction control device might be interesting to try too on a night when they don't prep the track.

What is this in? Weight? Post the 60' and mph too. Might need some tuning.

3280 pds, zeph, 108 trap speed, no traction, nobody else has any either. street car night. no room in the fender wells for any thing bigger than a 8 inch tire. third gear is where it lays down.
.... most off the cars are in the mid 13s. less than 10 percent run faster than that. I am just looking to stay out in front off the pack. the real racers come on the weekends and run brackets. those guys are like you heros. for us there are no eliminations, make all the passes you want. most of the guys try to line up with similar cars for fun of it....zbob

Re: cam change what to expect
Kind of reminds me of the FAST series, that race on factory tires. They run tight convertors and big cams, which can help with low traction, and make it up on the big end. You might try that RPM cam with the gears and convertor you have and see what it does, if you don't have the Lunati yet. Put a 100lb lb bag of concrete n the trunk too.zbob wrote:3280 pds, zeph, 108 trap speed, no traction, nobody else has any either. street car night. no room in the fender wells for any thing bigger than a 8 inch tire. third gear is where it lays down.

Are you going to use the oil additive to help break in the lifters?

yes sir. poured it already. old style gm eos on top of old union 76 racing oil. one of the benefits of being 60 plus young is having shit like that stashed, lol. bob
intake is the only hold up now.

Is it in the cardboard cans? Tell us how it works out when you get back from the track.

Re: cam change what to expect
I would expect little to no gain. The BBF family has inherent poor flowing exhaust ports. Not an issue if you give the engine what it needs for lobe area on the exhaust side.

Re: cam change what to expect
for the heck of it I just checked edelbrocks website. performer series heads. the 454 chev, the 460 ford, 440 chrysler heads all flow within 10 cfm on the exhaust side. so it looks like they all suck, lol about the same. so my ford with its aftermarket street type heads is on par with the rest. bob

The only ELECTRIC vacuum pump large enough to do a really masterful job with larger engines is the STAR EVP pump which uses DeWalt batteries for power.
They cost a bunch of money ... almost $1,800.00 I think.
Re: cam change what to expect
here is the one we got from summit it works good for power brakes and heater controls but would not recommend it for pulling vacuum out of the motor though
ebay has some that looks just like it but not sure if they are the same
