1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
1980 f100 2wd to 4wd Me and a friend picked up a 1980 f100 2wd want to no is the front axle a direct swap I have a old bush 1987 want to swap axles motor and transmission
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
Right on I thought so it's a good looking truck the bush truck we took a 302ho out out of a 89 mustang and found a offinhouser intake to fit demon carb on the newer heads but we used a t18 and a flywheel from a 1980 300 6 thinking it's a zero balance not sure but it always had a shutter or a bit of a radel would a truck 302 have the same balance we have one sitting here I no this isn't 460 talk but I thought I would ask
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
Wait, you too a flywheel from a 300 6 cylinder, bolted it to a 302, had a vibration and dont know why? If the rotating assembly is not balanced together from the harmonic balancer all the way back to the flexplate, you will get vibration and bad things will happen if you spin it too hard.

Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
I learned about the hole balancing thing from putting the internally balanced 460 in my 95 bronco with the t18 and aluminum bell housing and external balance flyweel had it rebalanced to zero so I figured that the 300 6 would not work with the newer 302 but I did pick up a 302 flyweel from a 87 f150 so I'm trying to figure out if it will work with the high output 302 the Mustang it came out of was a 89

Best I remember
300 inline six is neutral balance(no weights)
Early 302's are 28oz imbalance
Late 302's (H.O. 5.0). 50oz imbalance

I'd check the lug pattern on the F100's 9 inch.
My 82 had the 5x4.5 car pattern.
Other than that it's a very simple swap. I went from 2wd to 4wd. Then back to 2wd on my F100.

It's not a 9 inch now but I was going to swap rear end also to stay with same gearing I was going to fab my own lift like I always have in the past till I seen a tuff country 6 inch lift kit for $499 Canadian would like to go 9 inches with lift kit does anyone no of another place to look up cheap lift kits I would like to go nine inches and stay under $1000 total
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
Do they make a taller lift then 6 inch for the 1980s stock suspension I'm not finding anything was thinking getting a 6 inch lift kit with extended radius arms then getting 9 inch springs for the 70s lift and those wedges to tern the top ball joints and straighten tires back out or stick a leveling blocks under under the 6 inch lift springs to get 8.5 or 9 inches does anyone have a different way to get 9 inches out of a 6 inch lift? In the past I cut 4 inches out of the spring brackets on my 95 bronco to get ten inches out of a 6 inch lift but this truck will be driven on the road
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
I'm not much help. My deal was strictly mud racing.
Other than the 6" front springs, everything else was custom made.

Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
I think I found all the peaces skyjacker 8 inch lift springs pitman arm 6 inch center drop brackets and drop radius arm brackets and tuff cuntry extended 15 inch longer than stock radius arms and top ball joint camber kit for everything $1100 probably $1500 Canadian Canadian dollar at a all time low the only 8 inch kit I could find was $1600 so we decided to go all single parts and fab the back ones the front is done was thinking wedges and shackle flip and drop shackles to next set of holes
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
I am assuming this is a TTB front end that you are swapping in and not a SAS swap, because you stated that you found 6" center drop brackets. Are you going to add 2" spacers to lower the drop brackets to use with the 8" springs? I have seen a pickup that had 6" lift springs and the person used the 4" holes on the drop bracket instead of the 6" holes and the lean of the tires was terrible.
Is there a brace between the drop brackets? If not you may want to add one because my drop brackets did not have one and I bent them together, there is a lot of leverage having the brackets that much lower than the frame.
Since you want that much lift I would think a SAS swap would be a better idea. Just my opinion.

I did the same lift on my 95 bronco and used alignment cams for the top balljounts to straighten the tires and also have ripped off the center pivot drop brackets from the frame but added guests and they have held up since. I plan on doing a solid axle swap on my 95 bronco but this truck will be going on the road as a daily driver so wanted to go all manufacturerd parts to safety and never done the solid axle swap so will try it on my off road truck first

If you have 4.10's overdrive would be nice. If they are 3.50's or higher, I doubt you would get much use from it.

Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
I have the front axle all apart can you tell the gearing by counting the teeth
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
Divide the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion gear teeth, 41/10=4.10.

Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
The lift should be here in a few days just went with tuff country 6 inch $869 after tax and shipping to Canada. Motor is all ready assembled t18 cleaned up and panted new Flowmaster mufflers old set or headers are the worst looking part Thot of getting white header tape to clean it up a bit axles panted ford blue same as block aluminum shinning going to be nice to get it out of shop and try it out think all it needs is new tires and should be good for safety. Roofing season is coming to a end and my main man the formen it's his truck owes me a bit of money but he's happy. Working on the road going into my hundred acres freeze it up when the snow hits and it's fire wood season
Re: 1980 f100 2wd to 4wd
Lift kit installed. Clear coated the transmission and front diff. Painted everything inside and out accept outside of body let someone else do that. Probably 40 hours presurewashing and wire weeling everything looks good have to figure out how to load picks maybe can't do it from cell phone don't have a computer. Putting the motor back in this weekend. Had a problem with the holly in line fuel pump before we took the motor out of other truck the demond carb took more pressure I think 10 lbs have to see if you can get a gasket kit going with the t18 for now the f100 has a manual clutch didn't want to get into buying new master never looked at pedals to see if there the same manual to hydraulic.
