C6 won’t turn

Help, I have a c6 in a 49 coupe the h
tran,s was rebuilt ran it about 5years ago, went to move the car and now it won’t roll backward, The trans is in neutral but won’t roll backward . Any ideas before I tear it down to investigate. Thanks. George.

Make sure you don't have a hung brake. It tends to manifest itself just like you describe.

If you have drum brake the drums will rust to the brake shoes and lock down can you rock the car forward and backwards to see if the tires roll any if the rear tires don't move then the brakes is locked up

Thanks for the reply's but its not the brakes, I pulled the drive shaft off and it rolls great, Its in the Tran,s For the life of me I cant think of what would be locked up, I have tried different gears still wont roll.

Sure it's the trany? Can you turn the motor over?

Oh ya the motor turns , Put the tran,s in neutral will roll forward but mot back ward put a long bar on wheel studs roll forward but not backward, Pulled drive shaft rolls great, Could the 1 way clutch be locked up or a band stuck to a drum? Im looking for ideas. Thanks. george

Sounds like emergency brake cables are rusty and won't let
them release all the way, did that in my 02 F150.

No emergency brakes on the car yet, cant turn the output shaft on the tran,s

Pull the pan off the transmission and make sure moister didn't get in the trans and rust lock it up. I myself have never had a automatic lock up from sitting so I am not much help on it but sounds like it going to have to come out.

a C6 takes alot of effort to turn in reverse as your turning all the gear train backwards

Thanks guys, but this trans, will turn forward with no problem but feels and sounds like the park paw is engaged when you try to go in reverse, I even put a bar through the lugs and couldn't turn it in reverse, any more ideas, thanks George.

sounds like the band was torqued and not backed off

Can the bands bond to the drum, like the old tractor clutches would because this trans worked fine before I parked the car, now it wont turn in reverse. thanks.

You may just want to tear it down and find out what's going on.

"One way" is stuck in the "Forward Reverse Hub". Put the driveshaft back in it and rock it back and forth until it pops loose.

Well i guess i will have to pull trans and check it out i put the driveshaft back in and tried rocking it back and forth nothing then i hooked my golf cart to it and slid it backward, Man that trans is locked up in reverse, thanks for your help George.

Sure will be interesting to find out what is going on

This is just a crap shoot. Maybe try 2 things before pulling the trans. As Frank had eluded to. See if the band adjustment will turn in 1 1/2 turns. If not, back it out 1 1/2 turns. #2. Disconnect the shift linkage at the trans and see if the trans clicks the detent in all the gears. Maybe put it in reverse before you remove the shift linkage, and then see if the trans lever is truly in reverse. Just a thought. I hate doing major stuff when it was something simple. I'm not saying you do this, but it is like pulling the carb and the fuel pump and the intake and then find out it is out of gas. I'd even pull the pan and the filter and the valve body and have a look see before I pull the trans. That's just me tho'. You may find exactly what parts you need before you pull it and a set of clutches and a band. Maybe the servo piston is stuck up against the apply lever. How long has your car been sitting?

Ya that's what I will do take a close look at it ,pull the pan check the band make sure its not stuck to the drum, there is no shifter hooked up so I can shift it with the trans lever and im sure it is in neutral, I have checked every gear still wont roll backward, when you try to roll backward it sound just like metal to metal locking up. So the next step will to pull the pan and take a better look , I will post my findings. George.

With the pan off make sure park linkage is working . The "metal to metal" sound is a bit concerning

Ya I will take a good look at it , Almost sounds like a clutch pack locked together, Like the old tractor clutches would do they would stick to the flywheel.
