Re: 195 vs 180 vs 176
I've used the stock 1.76's up to about 1000hp pretty successfully with a sbf (before you say no torque it is about 840 ft/lbs with the nitrous) but now went with 1.80 straight cuts for reliability. I have talked with trans companies about the 1.95-1.98's and with my setup cannot think of any advantages. I think that I would stick with 1.80's.
We have always built our own trannys but now stepping up to the turbo combo, we haven't decided if we will go with the Rossler Terminator VI (2 year warrenty on the gear set and input shaft) or build our own with the best parts.
What is your combo, weight, and power adder?

It's the car in my avatar. I sold the 468 and am in the process of at least a 521 build, SCJA heads, thats all I can tell on the engine cause its in the real early stage, been told 750 hp+, 373 gear, have an Edelbrock Performer nos kit on it now and only went to 150 shot, I'm not really sure if I'm going use it with the new mill. Car weighs 3350 with driver. Hopefully both will lose a little weight.
Reason I'm asking is I found a pretty decent deal on a trans with a 195 gearset, JW bell, deep pan and a bunch of other goodies internally... for a price that's a few hundred $ more than it'll cost to do a PG with a 176 gearset. I don't know if the 195 trans would be overkill or just good insurance.

Re: 195 vs 180 vs 176
Mike and I have been e-mailing back and forth about this glide. It sounds like it's well worth the money however I have a little concern about the 1.95 gear set (Not breaking concerns). It will hit harder off the line however he will get into high gear a little earlier. With the torque that will be generated by the 528 I don't think it will be that big a deal.
I'm shifting into high gear around the 330 ft mark and I've also tried shifting earlier in an attempt to slow down the car but it didn't make any difference.
If needed, he could always sell the 1.95 planetary and get a 1.76 or 1.80 but I'd try it as is first and see what happens.

Mike
@ 3350 lb and only a 10% change in first gear ratio, which changes the final drive ratio from a 6.56 to a 7.27, I feel you will never know the difference. Now if it was an almost 30% change like Damon did going from a c/4 to a glide, that would be different.
It would be like going from 3.73's to 4.10 in your car. When your converter is right a one point rear gear change, is almost impossible to tell any difference.

To go out and buy one......1.80 st cut. If I was getting a deal on a tranny and it had any one of the three you listed I'd buy it and not sweat the deal. You can always change it later if need be.

Mike ,usually the quicker you get into high gear the more consistant you times will be too. You should have plenty of power to get in high gear with the 1.95 without losing any et

Agreed. If it's a great deal then jump on it.
Not to be a post whore but I have a built glide that I could sell also if you are interested. It is a 1.80 straight cut with 300M ringless input shaft. You would have to find a bell though. PM for more info if interested.
Reason I asked about the combo was if you were pooring the juice to it I would recommend the TurboGlide from Rossler and putting steeper gears in the rearend. Seen HUGE jumps with that setup.

I see that you have a glide in the for sale section, did you end up buying that 1.95?
Keep us informed on your opinions of it when you get it installed and working.

Yep, I'll be picking it up on Sunday It'll be awhile before I'll be able to try it out since the engine is in a very, very early stage. Which is just fine with me cause I'll have alot work to do in the mean time .Hoping to be able to it all together by August.
Heres the ad of the one I bought:
i have a powerglide with about 15-300 ft passes on it it is set up with a jw bell for the 429 460 bbf motors , deep aluminum pan best of everything inside , hipster pro tree valve body with pro tree brake,9drum clucth pack , all roller bearings , a vasco 195 racing planitary , harden in put and out put shafts , R servo ,tci sheild , aluminum rear roller bearing support , turbo spline ,vasco planitary was 1500.00,pro tree brake was300.00 ,drum kit was 350.00, this trans would cost at lease 5000.00 to get built.
