Just got me another 78 Bronco
Well I just couldn't pass this up! I love these Broncos (this one makes number 6)! This will be getting work done too. I oicked up that 68 429 my buddy had so I am going to do a mild rebuild on that and drop it in. After putting a 460 in my last one these 351m's just arent enough!! It only has a couple little rust spots to mix! The underside is perfect not any rust out at all. It only has 78,xxx miles on it to boot. It was wierd driving home with the cruise control set The a/c even still works.

Looks like a Ranger XLT model. Nice and low miles to boot. Congrats!

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Thanks guys! Yeah its a Ranger XLT. I cant wait to get it fixed up and repainted. Not to sure but I may keep the brown and white theme?? I also have a 9" lift that I have had for awhile just couldn't find a nice solid builder to use it on until now. I got a bunch of parts I have been saving for the right Bronco...I even have a factory CB radio And my old rusted 78 it also a Ranger XLT with the towing package it has alot of parts I am going to swap over to this one too.

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Thanks!
Does any one know what the best headers to use with a built 429 in the Bronco?? I was think L&L Fender well headers, just for the extra room under it...

Nothing bad about the L&L's, but the primaries are a little small if you have much of an engine. You might try to find a set of Hedman's or talk to Maddog and see what he makes.

Let me correct myself it will be a "mild" 429. And get driven every day. From the Bronco forums they don't have much good to say about Hedman Headers. How would these work?...http://www.stans-headers.com/Photos/246Y.jpg

With a mild 429, the L&L's would be about perfect.

I've got a set of the stan's headers and they fit great. I had them coated once I checked on fitment and have never looked back. Nothing against L&L, just never used them.

What kind of motor are you running with these headers? Do you have any pics of them installed on your truck? Also how far do the hang down? I see the L&L chassis headers hang really low and have a hard time getting the exhaust up and over the cross member...
Thanks

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Motor is a 460 with ported DOVE heads, the headers have CJ flanges. They have the same size primaries as L&L and a ball socket on the collectors. I have a 3" body lift that gives me some room to play when routing exhaust. I'm also using Hooker motor mounts which get rid of the stock towers, I tried L&L but they tore apart.
A view showing the collectors and the exhaust going above the transfer case crossmember:
A shot of the 2 1/2" exhaust to mufflers:

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Cool man! Thanks for the pics! They diffently fit better then the L&L headers! Ok so know I have narrowed it down to these or the 3/4 length L&L headers. Are you happy with the performance of these headers? Would you spend the money on another set or go with something else? Just dont want to end up with a header I wont be happy with.
Yeah I diffently don't like the L&L motor mounts at all!! Look way to cheap! I made my own mounts when I put a 460 in my 79 Bronco, and I may do the same with this truck...

For the size and power I'm making the headers work great. The workmanship is very good. I opted for the heavy duty flanges and have never had a leak. If your looking to make big power a bigger tube header would be a better choice. This is where having a plan for your goals is best. I keep fighting the urge to go bigger

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Thanks.
I am basicly building this to tow my mustang and play with in the mud/woods. I don't plan on getting wild with this build. Just something to tow and play with. But will need enough power to pull my car down the highway. It will only be on 36" tires too. Gotta keep it road friendly for sure.

I had a set of Maddog's on my mud truck before I built the uprights, and thought they were a nice, well constructed set of headers. Make sure and get them coated before you put them on though.

Yeah for sure coating first! What size exhaust would yous say to run I was thinking about Dynomax ultra flow mufflers. Just not sure what size to use. And I keep going back to a fender well header but...lol

I'm a big fan of the fenderwell exit headers, it helps to remove a lot of heat from the engine compartment, and the exhaust routing doesn't have to look like a pile of spaghetti. 3" pipes are going to be the ticket.

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Been doing some playing around with headers with my dyno guy. He does a lot of truck pull motors and has tried many different header configurations and I can tell you from what I've seen there is no real gain with going to the uprights. I thought there would be a sigficant boost in torque with them and I was sadly mistaken. Granted my tube size is a tad large for my motor (I have the 2 1/8" Schoenfeld uprights and really need 2"), but the only advantage in deep mud is if you get stuck the header tubes are completely out of the mud. This winter I plan to build me a more appropriate set of fender exit headers in case I get a little crazy and roll the truck. The uprights can really do some damage to a set of heads!

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
I got the 429 home last night!! I am going to freshin it up befor puttting in the Bronco. It is a low millage motor but it has been sitting awhile. So new rings/bearings and such wont hurt. I am also going to have the heads redone and cleaned up alittle bit and gasket matched. Nothing wild just a daily driver!
Has any one ran or run a Comp Cams Xtreme 4x4 cam? I am thinking about picking up this one for it???..

Re: Just got me another 78 Bronco
Just went and pick up my tires tonight!! Got me some 38.5x15x15 Boggers! Thanks to a local mud racer!! Thanks Randy! I also met a very cool guy too. And boy does he have some nice Ford mud trucks! All stroked big blocks of course. I am also going to pick up a front locker from him after the holidays.
Looks like all I need is a 3" body lift and the tires will fit. It already has a 3" suspension lift.
But some bad news is the 429 was going to buy ended up beeing locked up and had two broken piston skirts and a couple more the were cracked. Really bummed me out! So the big block swap will have to wait until my Mustang motor is done. But my buddy did hook me up with a built 408m. That he had out of his old mud truck. Really good hard runnin motor with JE pistons forged rods and work over heads. But it still isn't a BBF!!! lol But it will hold me over until I get one ready for it.
