F250 PS diesel
My brother has a 96 PS w/auto Tranny 4x4. He noticed a bad vibe,we lifted it up and found the tail shaft busted on the back of the tranny(BAD).It looks like pot metal and was wondering if it can be welded, he cant find a used one so far.

Most tranny cases can be welded.......... but...........getting it clean enough is really hard to do. Once the porous material gets impregnated with fluid such as gear oil or trans fluid it is near impossible to get it 100% clean. My luck welding trans cases has been 0-3. I've seen others that were welded but look like dog poop and kind of blobbed all over the place. I can get the inital weld to look decent but before I get finished something has always washed up into the weld, either blowing a hole in the case or just making more of a mess than I started out with.
If you do try and have it welded, be careful what you clean it with Rick. Brake Cleaner may seem like a good idea but it is NOT. The vapors off of the Brake Clean once you begin welding will KILL you within seconds, getting down in your lungs and pushing all the air out of you. Aluminum cleaner such as an acid based will work ,but stay in a well ventilated area. One other thing to look for and I am not sure how you go about it is to make sure that the piece is not magnezium. Magnezium is very flammable when welding on it, big no, no........

Re: F250 PS diesel
Rick if i is Mag, do not try to weld it..... you CAN NOT put it out if it catches fire. it burns white hot, at like up to 5600* and if you do never use water to try and put it out, it will splatter it everywhere(bad deal)
I use it for starting fires when out hunting, a teaspoon or less of filings will catch any wood on fire no matter if wet or not.......
best to try and find another housing

Magnesium...lol....
If the busted part is the piece that goes between the trans and the transfer case, I have one here on a spare trans of mine. For the low price of free plus shipping, no less...

If its the housing between the trans and the tf case get one from a 99 and up 4r100 as its cast iron....... Don't waste the time welding it. Make sure the hubs are not locked in or one is stuck as you'll keep breakng stuff and the tranny case will be next.

You may think that is a laughing matter Greg, but if you don't know what you are trying to weld together it could be deadly. Like I said I am not sure what those cases are made of. I'll bet there are quite a few people on this site that did not realize how combustible magnesium is.
Just some more useless babble I guess,

Re: F250 PS diesel
The LOL was not due to magnesium being a very combustible metal.
Rather, the notion of the tailhousing of a late model 4x4 Ford truck being constructed of magnesium made me LOL a little, that's all.

Travis you are right about welding a tranny on getting it clean enough I have welded a few ears on bell housing. The best way I have found to clean them is with brake clean but keep in mind it is very harmful to weld over it.I take a torch and heat it up good to burn all the oil and brake clean off that might be left and that way I am not right over the fumes. Then clean it again when it cools with some good degreaser and dry it good then weld it.Just a way I have found that works for me.

Re: F250 PS diesel
Yes I have read that before but I learned it the hard way made me sick as all get out.I might should have had added this to. When I heat it with the torch I hold the torch as far away from me as posible with a fan blowing behind me to keep fresh air blowing by me and the fumes blew away from me now.
