custom thor project
by john marcella ......
This is a Thor intake going on E460 heads on a DRCE 2 block. The bank stagger difference between ford and chevy made this thing a nightmare. But its done now! And is a great manifold for a boosted application.

Re: custom thor project
The intake is for my project. I will give the entire story of the block deal so nothing is to question. I needed a smaller c.i.d big block for use in the outlaw drag radial class. I wanted a NHRA prostock style engine that had still had the hp, but not the brutal torque of a 565 or 598.
I looked into the FRPP A460 block, but you can't can't move the lifter bores due to the lifter bore boss design. Next up was the Eliminator block. The lifter bores could be moved slightly, but the 3.00 mains and 10.300 deck were the hold up since the stroke would only be 3.850-4.00. I could cut the deck down to 10.200, but not much more because of the top bell housing bolts. Nothing could be done with the mains, so that option was gone since it would see 9500 rpms. The DRCE 2 was the next option...........of course the bank offset is different. The DRCE comes rough with a 9.500 deck, 2.750 mains, no lifter bores, head bolt holes and etc, which is exactly what I needed. The bore ended up at 4.600 along with a 3.750 stroke. The stroke was suppose to be 3.850, but some signals got crossed, I'm not happy, but not the end of the world.
Billet aluminum was out, too much money.
Wish I had the money to design a new iron/compacted graphite block with moved and rotated intake lifters, 2.750 mains, deck height options, cam journal option up to 70mm, along with a C-4 bell housing option.

#1 reason is stupidity for not using the DRCE 3 heads
#2 is pressure to keep it mostly Ford based
#3 the guy doing the heads did not have a DRCE 3 program
#4 did I say stupidity?
If I hurt the heads, DRCE 3 will be used next.

Re: custom thor project
The old A500 was basically unavailable. I found one good A500 block that sonic checked good for a 4.600, it cost $6000.00. Then it still needed to be bored, linebored/honed, cam tunnel line bored, lifter bores drilled, and etc. The DRCE 2 needed the same and only cost $2500.00. Machining cost me $3200.00, so I have $5700.00 in a fully machined block. The new prostock block and heads was not done yet, and is still basically unavailable and very costly.BOSS 429 wrote:maybe i missed it,but why not use a prostock block?
