I got this 73 Ranchero GT in exchange for helping a new friend get his 73 Gran Torino fastback to where he wants it, and the reason he needs the help is because he is undergoing chemo for throat and lung cancer. Honestly I'd help him just because he is a Torino guy but getting the Ranchero is just icing on the cake!

The 2v Cleveland that came with the Ranchero is little more than a pile of parts sitting in the bed of the truck and the tranny is long since gone, but it is a REALLY nice starting point! Much better than my ill fated 72 Ranchero GT, may she rust in pieces Crying or Very sad

Anyhow, onto the engine build! I have a few parts already such as a d1 block with all it's guts still in it, a set of D3 heads nearly ready to bolt on (thanks again Schmitty), some factory steel valve covers, and a Victor intake with a dominator pad that I scored off craigslist for $75 nearly 2 years ago. Those are just the parts that I have, I still need to do a full rebuild on the short block, pick a cam, intake, headers, ARP hardware, ignition system, and find a full set of brackets and pulleys.

Overall I imagine the build looking a bit like this:

Quik Fuel 850 DP
Torker II intake (or the FRPP equivalent)
D3 heads with roller rockers
Lunati 61600LK hyd. flat tappet cam
Flat top hyper pistons
all put together with either grade 8 or ARP hardware

I'd like to know what changes you guys would make, from the mundane to the extreme (I know someone is gonna say "make it a stroker", but this isn't gonna be completely insane... Yet...). Also, as far as tranny selection goes I have both a big bell C6 AND a big bell FMX and apparently Broader Performance is now making stuff for the FMX trannys!!!

Think maybe you are better off with a stock 460 manifold or a regular performer with that cam?
