Friday night 5/6/2011 TNT another update Success!
Well we took the car out last night for the first time since jumping over to Alcohol. Car ran a best of 6.05 or 6.04 last year on gas so we figured we could easily run the 6 index class at the local track on alky. Well the car first pass had the best 60ft ever 1.36 but than ran a 6.45 car did not airshift so dad figured a little was lost on having to shift it himself, so took it back and it ran a 1.37 60 ft and 6.40, took the car back and changed over the jets to 180's and took the car back up and it ran another 1.37 60ft and 6.41. Car was off on the mph (last year 110 last night best 103) but everyone was off(they were working on the lights when we got there) so we think the clocks were off some because everyone seemed to be off at least a few mph. We made one last pass and it just seems that it is not getting enough full from the holly pumps once it gets into high gear she just does not eat at all, ran side by side the guys running the 6 index class first qualifying pass until right after shift so we think it is running out of gas so should get a belt drive fuel pump this week and hope to take the car back out soon, we just figured that 2 holley 140 fuel pumps would be enough to feed the motor but I guess we were wrong! Sorry guys no video I just have a crappy video from my phone.

will have to ask on the lines I am thinking either -8 or -10an lines for the whole system, have Barry Brant regulator and the carb is a Holley 1050 Dominator.

if the lines, pick ups, filter, regulator is all done right those pumps are still gonna struggle trying to feed that thing meth, There could be issues with the carb itself, the Holley brand alky carbs seem to have issues, ie too small of needle and seats, metering blocks, etc etc. Its starving for fuel, but there might be more than one issue with the entire system.
Injection is nice, but there aint no reason a good carb wont run like a mofo on a smaller motor.........and even on a bigger one.

Is the fuel tank & Holley pumps in the front or the back?

front of the car, we had the car with the small block before on alky in the same car so besides selling the BG400 that we did have the rest of the set-up was the same we had I think with the small block except we went with the 2 holley 140's because the BG just always leaked no matter how many times we sent it back to be redone! We got the belt drive pump and just need to get 2 pulley's for it, hopefully we can take it back out in a few weeks and I am going to try and get my dad to see if he can borrow his best friends 1150 QF alky carb to take with us since he blew the motor a few weeks ago that way we can try the new fuel pump out and if that does not help it enough we can put the other carb on it and see if that helps it out and gives us a few ways of checking to see what might be wrong.
Thanks,
Doug

Took the car out last night and switched it over to belt drive pump, the car ran a best of 6.32 at 108 had a 60ft of 1.356. so we are going back today with a friends Ruper Carb and trying that out to see if the car can pick up, guess we should have asked before buying the Holley Alky Carb how good they work because we have a friend we ran into last night that he did the same thing and had to send a brand new Holley Alky carb to Rupert to get redone and he picked up 2 tenths with it worked by Rupert. Hopefully we can pick up 3 plus tenths with a Rupert or we are never going to be able to run the 6 index class. Cannot believe how it could lose 3 tenths going from gas to Alky even with this carb. Will update you guys later tonight after we are done with TNT!

Well went and put in one pass today, if we had no luck at all it would still be better than what we have been having! Borrowed a friends Quick Fuel Alky carb that usually runs around with us, Went down to make a pass and got in the water box, never heard anything like it before, had this real bad surging sound to it, dad went ahead and pulled the car up and staged the car, had a 1.373 60ft and ran 6.22 at 110, get back to the trailer and dad is just dumbfounded, just wanted to load up the car and go home, I told him to pull the hood off and let me cool the car down, maybe we could make another pass, so we take the hood off and the front top bolt for the fuel bowl was gone! I guess we now know why the car sounded so weird, I guess it was pulling air, but we could not find anyone with a long enough bolt to fit into the carb, because it has bowl extensions and was about 1/4 to 1/2 longer than any bolt we had. We will send the carb we have to Rupert this week and get it fixed right and hopefully take it back out in 2 weeks to TNT again, not sure we can pick up 2 plus tenths but still do not understand why this car would not pick up from the 6.03 it ran last year on gas! Hope the rest of you guys did good this weekend!

update for 7/16/2011
Well guys we took the car out tonight for TNT, it was a little cooler but so far we are happy with the results, we just know when it is hot again we will have to mess with the car again to get back to where we need to be. Well we last time had the timing for the motor set at 34 degrees and the best it ran was a 6.07. Tonight off the trailer the car ran a 6.15 with a 1.33 60ft the timing set at 32 leave chip 4800 and shift chip at 6800. So we went back to the trailer changed the timing over to 28 degrees and the shift chip up to 7000 car ran a 6.04 at 110 1.31 60ft. We than took 20lbs out of the back that we had hidden before when we were trying to slow it down for 7.00 and found it tonight because both the batteries went bad on us, spent the rest of the night having to start it on the charger and than not turning it off until after running. So we changed the shift chip to 7000 left everything else alone and the car ran 6.03 at 112 with a 1.31 60ft. We decided to make one more pass because it was taking so long to charge the batteries and than also jump the car off that we changed shift chip to 7400 left everything else alone and the car ran a 5.992 at 112 with a 1.29 60ft. I knew when the 60ft came up that we were where we needed to be and sure enough the scoreboard lit up like my face did with a 5.99. We have spent over a year trying to get this thing to run a 5, car for some reason will just not top end like most but it sure eats in first gear, so we might have to check the converter and see if we need to have it fixed before we try to run 6 flat on August 6th because in 85 degree weather it is much easier to run the number than in 100 degree weather. So we still need a few hundredths but we hit a major milestone joining the 5 second club Thank you guys for all your help and hopefully we can figure out how to squeeze another 3 hundredths out of it to make me feel comfortable enough to run the number!

Re: Friday night 5/6/2011 TNT another update Success!
well i am sure next time out since it will be hotter i am sure we will change the timing a little more, i just thought these FRPP Super cobra jet heads would like more than 28 degrees. Also going to call PTC this week to see what they think about the converter, they told us to keep a eye on where it drops to when it changings into high gear and at 7000 it would drop to 6000, not sure what that will tell him but we are supposed to call and let him know once we ran it. There was not much track there last night they had maybe a total of 16 cars there if that so even with the nicer temps there was still no track and the first weekend of the month they run 4.70, 5.70, 6, 7 index classes and there is a lot more track there so maybe than it will pick it up to where we need it around 5.98 to give us some room to drive the stripe, but it does feel good to finally get a 5 out of the car after it taking a year plus. I mean it is nothing more than a little 466 FRPP headed motor in a 2750 pound car with me in it I bet the 514 short block we have built would easily put us in the 5.80 range. Doug

aint nothen easy in the 5 second range! the drop on your converter sounds ok,i think 1-1200 rpm is what most look for.

Grats on the FIVE my friend! I wish we had a 6.0 class around here. OVOS had a 6.5 and a 7.5

Thanks Damon, we are going to change the rearend gears on the car, cannot remember if it is 4.30 or 4.56 in there now but we are going to put a 5.14 gear in it and hope to pick up 4-5 hundredths which would be right around what we think we would need when this heat comes back. Hope you and the wife are doing well have not seen you guys in a long time!

We moved shift point up from 6800, 7000, 7200 three straight runs but not sure what the trap rpm was for the runs but each time it ran faster this car just does not top end like some of our friends bbf motors do of the same size, best mph was 112 on the 5.99 pass

I agree with Jon. That 5.14 gear may hurt more than it helps.

Good to hear Doug. Down at Steele I couldnt get mine to slow down. I ran Gary in the first round and broke out of course you know that. I left at 3400 and shifted at 5700 on that pass and still ran a 97 or 98 cant remember.
Going over tonite to fool with it at Brainerd.
