Re: HEI for 429
IF that is a points distributor I see then get a "Pertronics III" with the corresponding correct coil.
The distributor plug looks like a Duraspark though.

OK thanks guys. I am new to BBF and this truck is also new to me. It ran when I puchased it 2 years ago, but just before i hauled it out of storage and down to Kansas it started missing like crazy. Now it wont start. I cleaned gas tank, replaced fuel filter, carb is brand new also. All I can think of is spark ?? pulled plugs and some are wet, othere dry so no combustion?? When it does fire you can smell gas. Hope it is not stuck valves

Re: HEI for 429
You have the first generation of Ford electronic ignition in your truck. They had a small cap and came out in either 74 or 75. They were only around for a couple years before being replaced by the larger cap they used till the end of distributors. Check under the cap to make sure it is not arcing between the posts or just all corroded to crap. It sounds like you need some new plugs and maybe wires. When you pulled the plugs did you spin it over and see if there was spark at them? If there is no spark at all it could be the ignition module but usually they just quit not run crappy.

Thanks heaps for the help guys. Replaced the plugs, dist. cap and rotor.(Thnx Jason she has the small cap) She started up and runs. Now to figure out how to tune her up. She runs rich (jeez I think she is just spitting gas out the back.) and she backfires enough to scare the next door neighbour.
But I have progress. Thanks Much for the advise

Needle and seat may be leaking thru. If it has set for a while w/gas in the carb,it probably needs a good cleaning.

Re: HEI for 429
Theres the problem, start it and look down through carb to make sure its not leaking on the inlet side into the secondaries. I had 2 that did that, trucks ran like crap and couldn't find the problem. Thats one of the reasons I will only run a holley, they seem to have a little better quality control.
