A good 302 build?
I might be coming across a early 70's 302/c4 combo. What is a great aluminum head, pump gas, carburated combo. Seems you can find a ton of used parts for these engines. The car will be a daily driver / crusier with a nitrous plate kit for the weekends. (Maverick, Comet style)

A 70's block is a good starting point for your stated adventure, even better if that 70's block would be the Mexican version. As to your remaining concerns, and along the stated application, a "clean-up" bore, upgraded rod bolts with of course re-conditioned rods. With the occasional assistance from nitrous I think an in-expensive forged piston would be nice. Compression ratio (static) about 10:1 and an in-expensive set of name brand aluminum cylinder heads with a 2.02" or maybe 2.05" intake valve. I'm not knowledgeable of nitrous application camshafts, but I would take into consideration the nitrous assist is only brief. With that said, I would steer more to the direction of a responsive engine with good street manners. The same with the intake. 600 CFM to 750 CFM of carburetor should be adequate for your adventure .... I think! Oh, by all means keep the C4!
Happy motoring,
Dave.

You can get close to breaking that block naturally aspirated with out of the box AFR 185's or Edelbrock E-CNC 185's. Pretty much anything between 170cc-205cc heads will get you what you want.
From my experience 302 blocks are 302 blocks. We've split them all. Been there done that.
In a lightweight Maverick or Comet with a 10.5:1 302 with a decent cam I think you can run 11.60-11.70's easily.

Re: A good 302 build?
I have a Holley 850dp I was going to use and yes the nitrous would only be for 1/8 mile Friday nights at the track. Just a small shot nothing crazy. You could pretty much not consider it in the engine build. I'm mainly wonder what heads, intake and as you stated compression ratio. I am hoping to do some trading for parts rather than shell out cash.
Camshaft I figure soilid or hyd roller (I don't know if the 302 blocks will allow hyd roller) Probalby be able to find a roller camshaft used in decent shape.

I understand you can't expect outragous performance numbers out of the 302 blocks. Just looking for a build thats cheap and fun.

If you go with a 347, you can split the block quickerererer.........At least that's what I heard from my buddy's cousin's uncle who used to work for Holman and Moody's next door neighbor...

A good camshaft, FRPP 303 heads and a "Parker Funnel Web" type manifold are hard to beat for "performance per dollar".
Without the nitrous, I'd use a Performer RPM manifold.
Re: A good 302 build?
Nothing wrong with stock blocks. I ran basically the same combo for 2200 passes and sold the long block to a guy that rebuilt it and is still running it. 306 victor jr heads 500 lift flat tappet cam victor jr intake 750 edelbrock carb. Before that motor we ran about the same setup a little lean and it detonated a lot and all the sudden it lost oil pressure. Took the motor out and started stripping it down. Took the intake off and the banks fell apart. LOL

Re: A good 302 build?
AFR has some good builds listed on there site. Could do a set of 165 afr's, comp cams thumpr series cam and a performer rpm with a 650 carb. that should be plenty of fun

Re: A good 302 build?
afr are great heads.
my build: 393 9.5 w block with 302 pistons vic sr intake 225 afr heads comp solid roller scat crank h beam rods. 950 QFT alky carb
best first year out 1.34 60 ft. 9.76 @ 138+ in a 1988 notch.
for the 302 consider this flat tappet cam. C7FE 6250 A works great in a 302 an 11 second machine with this cam and alum. gt 40 heads

Yup, my mother drove a Yellow Maverick, 6 cylinder with the Grabber package. Had black interior with low back bucket seats. Just being able to trade for one in decent shape is my only problem now.

Re: A good 302 build?
They are out their Josh, I see them from time to time.
Great little cars for a budget Bracket car.
302-347 / C4 and a 9" is hard to beat on a budget.
Get a Roller Block of your building a mild motor, it nice to be able to drop in the factory roller lifter stuff for cheap.
Dart has some nice aluminum heads for the $$$.
