Which cylinder heads at what compression ratio ... ?
Re: What's your timing ?
Edelbrock rpm's with 12.5-1 the heads flow 370 at .700 on a 572rmcomprandy wrote:jason wrote:I'm running 37* N/A a few ford guys I know say big fords like timing , my small block was 34*. what are you guys running?

We found that 35-36 ran the best at the track @12:1 compression3000 lb car

Re: What's your timing ?
I know you guys are thinking why edelbrocks , well I was just gonna do a 460 so i bought the heads first and was stuck with them , but it made 800 hp and 758 on torque . I don't know what heads to get to wake it up. I'm planning on heads cam pistons and intake in a year or two

Re: What's your timing ?
my A-head 526 on alky likes anywhere from 24-34lol.better air i've ran it low and picked up some.tonight in bad air with a gear change i found it to like 32 better but it was also a little fat cuz the air sucked.

On a deal like yours,I would say 34 thru 38*. starting at 36 and go from there. If you are going w/new pistons and want to stay w/your headers I would go w/p51's but the A heads would be a better choice if the cubes are over 572. jmo

Re: What's your timing ?
Cliff from Jon Kaase racing told me to run 28-29* with my scj heads, said they picked up 50hp on dyno when they droped timing down when they were testing with these heads

Re: What's your timing ?
Every cylinder head type and chamber shape, (which also includes the top of the piston in that), will require a different amount of ignition advance to be at its optimum.
28 to 31 degrees usually IS correct for an SCJ, a little less for a P-51 but, not an Edelbrock. I have encountered some low compression Edelbrock headed engines which need 39 or 40 degrees.
I haven't had experience with high compression Edelbrock headed engines but, it would seem that 35 to 38 wouldn't be out of the question with gasoline.

Re: What's your timing ?
I built the headers I have now and I don't have problem doing it for a set of A-heads , is the bore center on an A-460 block with a 4.5 bore gonna work with those heads?

The block bore spacing is the same ... the exhaust port spacing on TFS A460 heads are not the same.
They are on 4.840" spacing, (not 4.900" spacing), so an out of the box Big Block Chevy header flange will have correct port alignment. The exhaust bolt pattern on all A460 heads is Big Block Chevy per tube however, the early Ford Motorsport A460 heads had them spread slightly on Ford 4.900" spacing.

so I could probably cut the flange off my headers and spread them to fit those heads?res0rli9 wrote:jason wrote:I built the headers I have now and I don't have problem doing it for a set of A-heads , is the bore center on an A-460 block with a 4.5 bore gonna work with those heads?[/quote

I'm with Lem, 2" is too small on an A460 application. 2 1/4", would be my choice unless it's a real rock n'roll set of heads, then I'd go 2 3/8ths...

Re: What's your timing ?
well that sucks! Oh well it's not like I'm busy or anything , why not build another set of headers . Do they have to be 2 1/4 all the way ? What size collector ?Nevs wrote:jason wrote:Tube size is 2"Lem Evans wrote:Tube size or did I miss it?

Re: What's your timing ?
We went 2 1/4" into a 4" collector. We built ours out of a Hedman kit with a bunch of additional j bends.

Re: What's your timing ?
I'll buy some j bends then , I made the ones I have now 29" + or - an inch , I can't remember why or who told me to make them that long but I think they didn't hurt the power . How long should I make these for A-heads ?Nevs wrote:We went 2 1/4" into a 4" collector. We built ours out of a Hedman kit with a bunch of additional j bends.
