Silly Alt question Empty Silly Alt question

This will seem silly but since i'm not sure ... on a Alternator off my 1976 Thunderbird 460 , it has 3 wires.. 1 heavy wire to the battery, and 1 plug that has 2 wires.. Field and Stator...The Stator wire runs up to the electric choke. now the question is this.. The Field wire just connects up to the (run) position 12v hot right? just want to be sure I have it wired right... Thanks guys.

unless the Alt has been updated to an internal regulator it has to run through the regulator. Otherwise the Alt would charge at full rate all the time and smoke the battery.

It should look something like this... and yes you would need a voltage regulator.

Interesting. when i pulled this engine out of the 76 Thunderbird, there was no regulator. I'm not saying it wasnt missing, I'm just saying when i cut out the harness I did not see one.. thank you for the diagram , i'm going to go do some research on that car.
