Roll pin shearing
Guy's been running the same combo since 2009 and for all the sudden the roll pin in the dist sheared back in june. the only changes made was a carb swap to E85. Well fast forward to Sept. A week a go we tested and had a few stumbles on the last two runs. So Saturday first pas the car wouldn't stall and labored down track. Guess what another roll pin sheared? What do you think?

Re: Roll pin shearing
When you replaced the pin last time did you put the 1/8" back in it or did you go bigger?
Re: Roll pin shearing
Double pin it. I had one do it years ago in my motorhome. It only had 35,000 miles on it.I broke 3 of them before I double pinned it. I think it was probably getting wore where it had spun on the shaft. I put another below it a half turn away and never had another problem.

Re: Roll pin shearing
The process we use over at Bass Boat Bob's........move the o.d. of the pin up to 5/32" and then drive a smaller pin into the i.d. of the 5/32" pin.
Re: Roll pin shearing
Increase od, make sure gear is press fit.
New engine builder will only use the mutli-layer roll pins, In the past I've used hardened roll pins I got from a lawn mower shop.

Re: Roll pin shearing
I broke a pin a couple of years ago for the first time. I bought a bag of the mult-layer pins and have been just replacing it at the beginning of every season.

Do not use green oil on the shaft during the gear install......it's so slick that no pin[s] will be able to retain the gear.

Re: Roll pin shearing
Also check the distance from the bottom of the dist to the gear. If it is too long the gear will rub the block and shear the pin.

Also make sure you are using a hardened pin. Most of the Silver pins at the hardware store are very soft.

I put the 1/8" back in. And it was not a double rolled pin.

Yea that what I thought about. I fixed that dist I've been running for years and had a extra so I set it up the same (locked it out) and put a bronze gear on it so what this happened I cold just swap it in a few minutes.
