429 0r 460 for 4x4
I have a 4x4 not an extreme off roader just fixing it up will see mostly street use and once in awhile trip to the hills.
It has a 75 460 now due for a rebuild, i also have a 429 think it is a 71 but has some 73 parts, heads unknowen for sure.
I plan to rebuild one nothing real radical , wondering what one would be best? I'm leaning to the 429. Any tips or tricks welcome. Thanks.

The 460 for sure, don't give up the c.i.d.

THe 460 is a way better choice, and not just because of the extra cubes. It will be cheaper to build the 460.

Either Block is fine..... and a stroker kit is the ticket !!! But if its not in the budget, use the 460 crank and rods with some aftermarket FT pistons if you intend to keep the stock 74 heads.

Wow, didnt think everybody would say keep the 460! I really wanted to do the 429 , thought it would be the better engine and i liked it to be different from all trucks having 460's . I have yet to get any prices on rebuilding them, thought they would be the same price or close.
So if i use the 71 429 with unknowen heads get flat top pistons, and use the 460 crank and rods? I am on a tight budget, so can't go with a dream engine! But want a good running engine. I wish i knew for sure what heads these are, weird the number is gone, maybe it really doesnt matter for this engine. I would post a picture of the numbers on the heads but not sure how to , and don't want to get a hosting site if i have to .
Thanks for the help!

After having a 460 in the truck you would be dissapointed with a 429. I made that mistake once. I used the same cam and heads from the 460 for the 429 and it just wasn't as strong. It did run good but just didn't have the power the 460 had. Just make sure your heads aren't D2VE's. They have a totally different looking combustion chamber than other 429-460 heads.

plus 1 for the 460 . i cant think of ANY advantage of building the 429 over the 460 other than a class rull for CI displacment ?

They both would be pretty near the same engine and machining for rebuilding the short block would be the same except the 460 has a bit more than a quarter inch MORE stroke and the supporting new parts are more plentiful.
The answer to the question of which to use isn't even close.
