OK F-250
On the other thread that I started (and went God knows where?) the answer looks like I should get an F-250. I am leaning towards the 6.7L because it will pull better than the 6.2 and gets better mileage. Lem makes a good point about the additional cost of the "stump pulling motor" vs. gas 6.2. My two highest priorities when buying a new truck are SAFETY and RELIABILITY. I don't plan on racing the truck; just want to get to the track without breaking down and sitting on the side of some interstate waiting on a tow--nothing good happens when you are sitting there!!
Lem, does the 6.2 have the reliability that the 6.7L seems to have?
My 6.4 has never let me down and I don't want to move to a less reliable engine.

Re: OK F-250
You already know the cost of maintenance on the diesel engine, so that will be no surprise to you. They aren't cheap, but if you want or need the extra tq, it's worth it. There is nothing wrong with that 6.2L gas engine from the feedback I've gotten on them. When I went to buy mine, I was in bad need of a big truck to pull trailers and had to have one right away. If it would have been a gas engine I would have felt no shame in owning it. There is a local large animal veteranarian in my area that has a 6.2L gas engine in his "chase rig" and he is very happy with it, both power and mileage. I doubt you could go wrong with either engine.

Re: OK F-250
My first thought of a "tow vehicle" would target safety. Can I stop if stopping is absolute? Will the chassis offer stability, in most conditions I may encounter? Can the engine and transmission combination offer dependable, efficient operation relative to the application? Then comfort. I am absolutely out of touch of the abilities of the modern day engines, gasoline or diesel. I would weight the fact of the initial expense of the diesel option, the expense to operate the diesel and do I really need the power a diesel engine offers? With gasoline and diesel prices moving farther apart (in my area), a stout gasoline burning engine would be hard to pass on, especially with the initial expense of the diesel as Lem mentioned.
An economical, powerful and dependable gasoline engine in a 1 ton chassis would be hard to beat in my world! Also just a thought, is every mile the "tow vehicle" travels, a mile of towing?
JM$0.02,
Dave.

No doubt the 6.7 PS is the king of Ford towing engines, and if someone can afford it, then it would appear to be a better choice.
As was said before....at what cost tho ?

Quite honestly the new big diesel trucks aren't that much more than a well equipped gas 1/2t. If you get a truck without all of the really fancy stuff, you can get into one for about $40k depending on what rebates you qualify for. A tricked out 1/2t Eco Boost is well above $30k. Maintenance is a little higher with the diesel, but the power from that engine is worth it if you tow a lot. If you only tow a couple times a year, then it's hard to justify the diesel.

6.2L unless you're towing all the time and towing more than 10k. You won't miss the Diesel one bit. I've owned three 7.3's and love my V10.

Re: OK F-250
IMO as far as reliability the gas engine is every bit as good as the diesel.
How often are you going to tow? How far?
Are you going to keep it untill it wears out or are you going to trade it in 3 years?

Re: OK F-250
Bruce, i think you can't go wrong either way. For the mileage you put on that 6.4 already go with the 6.7
I sold my 6.4 with 128 on the clock and it still ran good, and is now DPF deleted, chipped and still going strong. I guess I was a lucky one, lol...
I really liked the ride of my longbed cc over my shortbed cc if that makes a difference to you. It's just that much smoother pulling a trailer, but it's that much more of a b#$%h trying to park too!!!
