Is that the engine that is half 2/3 of the 6 cyl. Cummins in the Dodge trucks?
A month ago the guy that bought one of my T-Birds mentioned someting about the 4 cyl. cummins.
He said they came in bread trucks. Apparently they are pretty good engines.

They are a super reliable engine. There is a diesel performance shop close to here that has put one in a late model S-10. I saw it the other day pullin a gooseneck trailer and it was the wierdest thing to see.Alan is right, they put them in bread trucks,Doritos trucks and i've seen some in the chevy box trucks.I always wanted to do a 4BT swap in my ranger.---RED

Amazing little torque-monster diesels. They have a cult following. One place you can look for them is in step vans that have been converted over to those engines, such as the old Kilpatrcik Bread step vans or the Fedex delivery step vans. The reason for this is because as the in-line 6's and small block V8s became worn out in those vans, the quick fix was offered by a company called Repower.

Repower offered the 4BT as a quick swap deal for those step vans. Van himself bought a dead step van that was owned by some big commerical moving company (Global Express?) and rebuilt the 4BT that was in it. Since the step van's original engine was a Ford 300 6 (obvious because of the radiator and the trans adaptor plate), the repower already had a Windsor transmission adaptor plate on it. Van removed the trans that was in the step van and bolted a ZF-5 speed directly to the adaptor plate on the 4BT. Fully loaded with 8 compeltely assembled engines, Van's step van can climb Hwy 405's Sepulveda Grade up and out of the San Fernando valley and over to the Long Beach exporter....without downshifting from OD 5th gear.

Paul

P.s.: The Cummins 4BT debuted at the SEMA show in the 1980's. Van was so interested in going to the SEMA show specifically to look at the new 4BT engine that Chuck Stevens kindly bought Van his show pass. Cool

Dave,

I don't know if you have it or not but the February 2011 Petersens 4 Wheel & Off-Road is the Magazine you're looking for.Page 68 has a 66 Bronco with the 3.9L Cummins 4BTA Diesel and like Paul Kane mentioned it had a Ford ZF 5 Speed transmission.

Later Mark.
