If you go the chemical dipping route, make sure they also dip the body when they rinse and neutralize whatever type of chemical they use. If they don't do that, it will bleed out from any pinch welds and crevices in the sheet metal and ruin the paint job. Years ago when my brother had his paint and body shop he had a truck cab dipped and made sure they had the ability to dipped the cab in a rinse tank. After the cab was loaded on the trailer we had brought a garden sprayer with us filled with Ospho and sprayed the entire cab and soaked all of the joints really good to prevent any rust from forming. Paint job turned out beautiful. Wink

Propane torch and a scraper for the heavy undercoating then Black beauty on the underside and heavy rust areas and media / shells on all the others.

IMO problem with the chemical stuff is it get inside everything and is a PITA to get out and neutralized and getting something in the areas you cant get to to seal / protect everything.

Only problem with using some heavy grit is that an improperly trained blasting guy will put too much heat into the body panels and warp the shit out of them. My dad's dealing with this with a hood right now on his old Cougar.

I'd soda blast the areas you need to be able to weld to and want to paint in the future.

That chemical dip is good if they rinse and dry it well then dip it into a primer/sealer like Doug mentioned...

Also, some of the cars I've seen that came back from dipping did have some small holes drilled into certain areas to allow air to escape when the body is submerged.

I don't know about CA, but around here it's getting harder & harder to find guys who do the acid dipping because of all the EPA bullshit they have to put up with.

If you do go the acid dip route don't be afraid to ask questions & compare shop vs shop. Some of them know their stuff & some are just complete idiots that will fuuk your stuff up good because they just don't know what the hell they are doing.

That is another thing I am worried about, the place in Oregon has done all sorts of cars & trucks, I e-mailed both places to get some more information.
