352,390,406.427,428? not 429-460 related but need help!

anybody know a easy way to tell the difference between the lot, i bought a 68 mustang with what is supposed to be a 390 n 4 speed and i cant tell what it is. a bud of mine come by n looked n said it was a 428 but hell i dont know thanks in advance for any help

428's are externally balanced.

Could check the stroke with some heavy wire

3.98= 428
3.78= 390

Also check the casting numbers to rule out any obvious ones

cant find any casting numbers the headers are all in the way, will get it on the lift as soon as i get all the wheel cyl. replaced n new shoes on it .as of right now she wont stop.

Check MUSTANG TEK. Bunch of casting numbers, years, and ID stuff.

hope your "0" isn't actually a "8" the heads with C8AE-H are standard issue 390 car/truck heads. Which is what ford put in the 390 mustangs back in the day. Do the heads have just 8 exhaust bolt holes?

A CJ head has 16 exhaust bolt holes, and a 390 GT head has 14. At least my '69 Torino did. Check the stroke like was mentioned. A 352 is 3.5 inch stroke. Also, a 428 is a different balance from all the rest. (ie, flywheels won't interchange)
