I know you have to be joking right ?
Ran Across this also below...
The slot/groove faces the stator support or in towards the trans.
The groove lines up with the converter feed hole at the bottom.
Ford is rather specific about these - more so than other bushings.
Indeed I have found that, if not installed per the instructions below,
they are generally found very worn or spalled on teardown. I also
usually see paint marks on the pump body adjacent to the notch (groove)
on the rear edge of the bushing that perhaps are inspection marks to
verify proper alignment. Here is the text and picture from my shop manual:
"Make sure the bushing is installed with the slot and groove positioned
to the rear of the pump body and 60 degrees below the horizontal centerline."
Be sure to lubricate the bushing, seal, and converter stub with Vaseline before
you assemble them. You can burn a seal up in about twenty seconds if you
install the pieces dry. That is what usually galls the bushing too.

I know on the E40D 4r100 stuff they are the same in the pic you posted. This is the way I do um all, never had a problem. I've seen them in different spots also when its evident the unit has been into. I don't guess it matters much, I just always do them like the pic. I do lube the bushing and seal with trans gel or the like.
