Starter for Hi Compression motor
What are you guys using? Especially in the mud. I got one of the new Ford mini starters' its not any better than the old style. I can get one start and then it gets hot and won't start again for at least a couple hours until it cools down. Even with the timing retarded.

mines over 14.5-1 and starts great with the same starter, even when it was 12v...............I'll bet you got a cable or a ground issue, even rotor phase can be a problem.

Re: Starter for Hi Compression motor
I had that problem with my old Sportsman/Super Stock engine. It didn't matter what was on it for a starter, it just wouldn't turn it over. My solution is a jump box directly hooked to the solenoid. That did the trick every time. I could get to it easily under the fender, but was just about to put the solenoid in the cab on the passenger side where it would easier to get to when needed. Check the grounds really good, as well as all cable connections.

I agree, check all of your connections, and make sure you have good grounds. I probably go overkill on grounds to most people, but my 521 was 14.2:1 C/R and with a Digital6 Plus I ran a stock Ford starter I got from Carquest about 6 years ago, that I took off of my street truck and ran it for 3 years on the Banana without issue...

If it was a bad connection, cable, or ground wouldn' it suck on cold start also. But I did go ahead and clean all my connections. Add another ground. Ck'd all the cables and still no start when warm..

What size cables? To small of a cable will cause this issue when hot because the wire cant carry enough amps to turn the starter correctly. Also look at the strands of the cable the finer the strands the more amps it will carry as long as the cable size is the same.

RE Starter
Make sure the primary cable is big enough.
Also, this is what I used on my puller with 16:1 compression with locked out distributor and never had a problem hot or cold. (I would spin the motor before hitting the ignition swtich though)

Re: Starter for Hi Compression motor
I have a Powermaster Ultra Torque on my 16/1 motor, works great.

OK I don't know how big of cable you have on your starter system. But here's what I did, Went to Tractor warehouse and got me 20' of single O't welding cable and clamps in the welding section, I then make my cables and solder the clamps on the cables. Put some shrink wrap on them and install them.

With my battery in the trunk that is what cable use. If you are having questionable ground issues try running an extra ground cable right off one of the starter bolts and see if that helps. You can never have enough grounds IMO.
