Record Book Bull Elk........ Empty Record Book Bull Elk........

Post  ThndrChkn September 19th 2012, 11:31 am

This bull elk was struck and killed by a woman in a Nissan "CAR" last Thursday morning, about 8 miles north of my house on I-15... A friend of mine that works for D.O.T. got the call to go pick him up Thursday morning shortly after it happened. Though not Boone & Crockett material, he's definitely Pope & Young material. (Archery Kill) I haven't heard final #'s yet, but I'm guessing he scores in the 340" + range... I saw this bull in the same spot last year before hunting season, running a harem of cows... Looks like he let lust get in the way of common sense this time... Right now, there are bowhunters everywhere in awe. This guy could've been in someone's freezer... Most likely, the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks scavenged all the useable meat from the animal, and donated it to a local shelter for the needy... The bottom pic is just before F.W.P. officials unloaded him at their wharehouse. He weighed 947#!!! Field dressed he'd still clear 700#...

NOt to piss on your nice bull, 340 is nice, but in Az we use to get them in the 400 plus, Archery world record some-where in the 460 range?
is the Elk in your area a different species than in Az?

Guess I found my answer>>>

Subspecies Typical to North America | Ranges where they are found |

The "Grey Ghost" may very well be one of the greatest challenges for today's Bowhunters. Volumes have been written by Outdoorsmen and Wildlife Managers about these Magnificent Beasts, yet mystery seems to surround them. They truely hold a special place in the Bowhunter's Heart.

Elk have long been classifled by biologists into at least six subspecies. Biologist Olaus Murie, who studied them extensively over a lifetime, catalogues them as follows:

EASTERN (Cervus canadensis canadensis)--The same species discovered by the first white men in North America. For simplification here, it is defined as all elk east of the Rocky Mountains, although a few "eastern" elk undoubtedly took refuge in the Rockies when driven from the Great Plains and Black Hills.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN (Cervus canadensis nelsoni)--The elk of the Rockies and West, other than Pacific Coast. Most of the top trophies listed in record books (such as Boone and Crockett Club's world annals) belong to this longer-tined species. (Note: This species is sometimes classified Cervus elaphus.)

ROOSEVELT (Cervus canadensis roosevelti)--The dark species inhabiting rainforests of Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, Canada, and, to an extent, northern California. These elk are often larger (but not necessarily heavier) than the Rocky Mountain variety.

MANITOBAN (Cervus canadensis manitobensis)--Elk of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Some historically crossed the border into Great Lakes states.

MERRIAM (Cervus canadensis merriami)--Now extinct species which lived in the Southwest, mainly Arizona and New Mexico.

TULE (Cervus nannodes)--The nearly extinct "dwarf" wapiti of central California marshes and tule swamps.

This is true Adam. Although now extinct, there are definite same gene characteristics in Arizona/New Mexico bulls as the Merriam's of long ago. That, and Arizona/New Mexico just have far better management than the northern states. Like lack of hunting pressure. Dependiing on area, our season starts Aug. 15, and ends the weekend after Thanksgiving. In the last 5 years or so, Montana has been starting to produce several bulls in the low 400" range. But, due to our new pal, the "Canadian" Gray Wolf, elk numbers in the west have dwindled severely since their "reintroduction" in 1996...

Here is a very very good documentary from 2010 about them and their "reintroduction":

Ive seen a white tail that big, but that was 20 years ago. But to get to him you had a 2 day walk thru the roughest terrain you could Imagine. in Montana (Bob Marshall Wilderness) Love to go back there but last time I was there you kept your eyes open and moving every second, I know I was Heliported to safety 3 times, (Grizzly) the last time I ran and grabbed the helicopter skid on the run and was carried a 1/2 mile before setting down....I never saw the grizz but the pilot said she was 100 ft off my A$$ and coming fast....
