I know it; it kind of reminded me of that credit card commercial. Where the barbarian was picking out his prom photo for his credit card! Had his hair all slicked back and perfect!

Automotive Machine & Performance/Ford
There's no denying that this year's Challenge has brought out some exotic machinery. Automotive Machine and Performance brought another Boss Ford big block to the contest, this being a 432-cubic inch version with dual quads on a tunnel ram intake manifold. This experienced team had the Ford up and running with no problems, and by the heavy thump in the cell the engine sounded strong. The warm-up pulls showed the engine running a little rich, and adjustments were made to the jets and air bleeds during the tuning period. The team continued with their tuning regime, adjusting out a touch or timing. These adjustments paid off with an improved output, putting the score for the engine at 2554.1, enough to put the team in the current second position.
Pull # 1 2 3 Avg
Torque 544 537 536 539
Horsepower 528 522 520 523.3
Final Score - 2,459.1 @ 432 CI

OK, I know I've done this before, but I'm terrible with names. How about someone add the names to the pictures so we know who is who. I know Charlie but that is about it.

The first picture...
Left rear - Dave Freelander
Left front - Randy Malik
Right rear - Charlie Evans
Right front - Mike Stephens
The second picture is of Eric Simone (in the blue shirt) of Diamond Pistons. Don't know who the other guys are though.
Someone correct me if I misspelled a name or two.

That is just awesome. It is going to be something to see all these tunnel ram motors lugged down low. Kinda blows the tunnel ram is too much for the street theory to shit.

2nd Picture
That's us in the second picture....Eric in the hat, Todd Miller in the dark shirt, and me - Doug - trying not to laugh. It was a photo op moment when the photographer said lay you hands on the engine and make like your doing something and Todd said, yeah but my tool doesn't fit. Its a tough crowd on this team.
Here's our specs on the engine:
534 cu in,
Original C9AE-E Boss 429 block
TM Enterprises HO heads and valve covers
4.444 bore, 4.3 forged Scat crank, 6.8 Scat rods with bolt upgrade
Diamond pistons, 11.5 compression ratio
Gilsbach headers
Comp street solid roller cam and lifters
Original Boss 429 Dominator carburetors
Original Weiand tunnel ram from the 70's
Precision Oil Pumps oil pump
Canton 8” deep marine pan
T&D rockers
Danny Bee belt drive
Trend pushrods
MSD ignition box, dist, wires
So far, Wed afternoon, we're still the highest scoring big block. Hard to compete against small blocks when there is an exhaust system restriction.
We just nicked Dave's Boss 429 by a small margin. Just a small change in airbleeds could have switched it the other way, though it is more difficult for our larger 534 to score the same as his 432.

cool...thanks for the update, Doug!
Never thought about the disadvantage to BB's with header restrictions.

Yes, Eric and I went in 2008.
The disadvantages to big blocks in the EMC rules are from running mufflers and then the UNOH dyno facility has 15 foot long 3 1/2 diameter pipe from the back of the muffler out the wall. The pipes are a conglomeration of joints, expansions, contractions which is probably fine for simulating backpressure for a mild small block street car but causes excessive backpressure for a big block. The other disadvantage is in the scaling effect of larger engines - the calculation for the points results divides by cubic inches which makes it essentially a efficiency contest - hp+torque/displacement - and larger engines get less efficient per cubic inch because of larger bearing and pumping losses.
