8.8 vs 9 inch rears
So i have two rears
one is 8.8 - eaton posi 31 spline alloy usa axles, 3 inch studs, trickflow rear cover stock 02 gt brakes
other is 9" detroit locker, 31 spline, 4 bolt axles, alum pinion support no brakes
8.8 needs: clip elims or stange ends, new gear (4.10s)
9 needs 5 bolt axles and brakes (going to upgrade brakes anyways) and going to get a summit alloy center for it to kill some weight
the 8.8 is much lighter, but the 9 inch is stronger (one rear will be sold to fund the others fix)
Ideas or opinions

car is 3440 with me right now. working on getting 300 off that total over the winter if not more.
Car is planned to be a mid 10sec car (only been 1190 at 118 so far) so there is more power coming.

Mid 10's is nothing for an 8.8. Weld the tubes and let it buck

Which Eaton position is in the 8.8? You may want to call Moser and order a 35 axle and spool kit.

Re: 8.8 vs 9 inch rears
so 9 inch ends on teh 8.8.............. can i use my current aftermarket axles with the 9 inch ends with different bearings
Re: 8.8 vs 9 inch rears
The 8.8 needs axles the same length. Your 9" will have different length axles. You could reuse your bearings if you have the matching 9" ends added to your 8.8. If you use the "torino" large 9" housing ends, Explorer rear disk brakes will bolt right up. Makes for a nice cheap rear brake upgrade.
