Re: hydro Steering
If you are referring to an 12vdc hydraulic pump, then yes, I have done it and it worked ok until I got up over 1500 lbs on the weight bar. Then its a good idea to replace the stock gear box with full hydro steering.
Re: hydro Steering
I've been running mine plumbed to the box for 5 years with zero problems. Mount your switch for the pump within easy reach so you can turn it on and off when driving around before and after you pull to save your battery.

Re: hydro Steering
Just make sure you set the pump pressure to the maximum pressure recommended for the stock gear box as the pump can put out alot more pressure than a stock gear box can handle. Also, don't be surprised if you have difficulty turning the wheel when stopped.

Alan, How do you know how much pressure the stock box will take ? Is there settings on the pump ? Was going to order the pump within the next day or two.

Re: hydro Steering
You might want to ask these questions over on the Reddog forum. Those guys are dedicated to truck pulling.
If memory serves I seem to remember 1100-1200 as the max recommended on the oem gear box but that was for for my truck and may be different for yours.

Re: hydro Steering
This is the unit I'm using on my truck. I never made any pressure adjustments.

That's the pump I run on my full hyro steering setup. Works great but sucks up a TON of electricity to run it for very long.

Re: hydro Steering
Any of them suck alot of electricity! I actually bought one from a company that set the pressure and everything for me and it wasn't a haldex unit, but it was still the highest single power draw on my truck.
That said, I ran 3 1000 cca deep cycle batteries from Napa and no alternator and I could easily get 3 runs before recharging if I had to. Generaly though, I charged after every run. Dont know if it made any difference, but I completely rewired my truck and took out all the original wiring and dash, so there wasn't any "extras" drawing power.
