Attacked by coyotes.
Every morning at 4 am I walk my dogs on the same trail, been doing this for the past 3 years...
Well now I have a puppy, 13 week German shepherd puppy.
Well Monday morning the puppy was attacked by three coyotes, my older shepherd and i jumped in the middle of it, the shepherd was tearing apart two of them and I was on top of the 3rd. Got my hand and thumb pretty good... The puppy got the worst of it.
The Mountain Cur (hound dog) is no JOKE, that dog was cleaning house on all the other coyotes right off the trail back in the woods...
I know coyotes, and this is NOT normal of them... Must have either been hungry or crazy?
anyway, I think I might need to start packing some heat?
in your minds, what would be a good pistol to carry while out walking my dogs. I have a desert eagle 50, but that thing is just too much, we don't have Polar bears here just coyotes..
I guess smaller, with as many rounds as possible!

Re: Attacked by coyotes.
a 10 shot 22 LR revolver or Semi Auto would be a good choice IMO, Maybe even a 22 Mag cylinder for the revolver?
Did you report this to the Game Warden? It would be a good thing to do, if they are getting agressive they may start thinning them out in short order.
Thier was a special about this on TV where a Canadian Girl was killed by a pack a few years back while hiking.
and get to a doctor.......

Re: Attacked by coyotes.
took the puppy in first...
then i went in.. It's a series of 4 shots of 14 weeks for me.
went to the local Police dep.. They contact the DNR. The DNR came out to my place, we went over what happened, walked out to the area where it happened and looked around. Found 2 dead coyotes.. Guess my hound is a bad mother.! DNR loaded those 2 up and are gonna do some testing on the brains for rabies...
anyway, the coyotes out here are out of contorl, DNR will set some traps. I talked with all my neighbors about this, most of which have little kids in 4-H with show animals (chickens, rabbits, lambs.)... I think a little coyote hunting will be going on..?

Lots of 9mm that come in small packages these days, and that packs plenty of punch for a coyote sized animal. Something you could keep in your pocket or hidden pretty easy! 22 would work but I've shot several with a 22 and it generally takes more than a few rounds to do the job!

the first pic is Manny, he is the Grandfarther of my puppy Yuma.
here are the pics of Yuma, and my rescue german shep Barkley.. ( Barkley did save the day yesterday morning.)
Barkley is nothing like Manny, but a good dog in his own right..
I love the Black Sable look of the German Shepherd..

Good looking dogs you have
Google Caucasin Shepherds or Caucasin Mountain dog......there are some youtubes of them defending a herd a sheep from a pack of wolves......the Caucasin Shepherd wins and in one of them shows him laying on top of his freshly killed wolf

Same here...
That sucks to hear Adam... I hope you and your pup are ok...
I would guess that they were more than likely rabid, as coyotes are usually pretty fearful of man. If I was to pack anything, I'd not use a 9mm for anything but a doorstop or a bookend. If you're an auto kinda guy, I'd pack no less than a .40 S&W but lean toward the .45. And for these particular circumstances, I'd shoot a hardball round for the penetration. I'm sure the 9mm crowd will flame away because I think they're worthless. Sure they'll kill ya dead as well as anything, but I'd rather shoot something once with the bigger round than 2-3 times with a 9mm myself. It's a proven statistic. I'm a wheel gun guy myself, and would recommend a Taurus .357 Magnum 7 shot revolver, with 158gr Hornandy XTP ammo. It also has a pretty slim frame for easy carry... Makes for a very unhappy day for anything on the recieving end...

I agree with Doug on caliber, minimum .40s&w. I'm a big fan of the Glocks. Hope your puppy feels better, very nice looking pups ya got there.

We have different coyotes in the east, they apparently mixed with wolves at some point in time and are more prone to packing up and being more aggressive than the western ones. And they are a lot bigger than the western and southwestern ones.

Re: Attacked by coyotes.
There's only one pistol for me in that situation and it don't miss. It's called the Judge,it shoots EITHER 6 rounds of 410 shotgun shells OR I think ^ rounds of 45's. Scary situation Adam, are you sure that wasn't one of those WILD women you hang with.

3X on the Judge and a 1911 as backup.
and replace the shot in the 410 with small ball bearings.

Yes the 17 is the full size glock in a 9mm! It does hold 17 in the mag and 1 in the pipe! Would be a fine choice but doesn't fit in a pocket very well and would require a belt holster! Glock does make a "baby" version for the 9 as well which would be a lot more comfortable to carry around and still holds plenty of rounds! There are many choices but basically just comes down to what your comfortable with carrying! I carry a glock in my line of work and prefer them simply because they have no external safety and when you pull the trigger it goes boom every time! I'm very familiar with most pistols both semi auto and revolvers and would be happy to give ya any info that I can!

I'm with the big gun guys on this one. If I'm shooting at something because it needs killin', I want it to turn a double back flip before it hits the ground. Some critters get pissed when you poke little holes in 'em.

Re: Attacked by coyotes.
I agree with the big bang / hole theory but in okla. we can carry open or concealed.. The big gun is harder to work around and gets heavy by the end of the day..Most folks here dont carry large caliber firearm. Besides , around here little coyotes are the only wild critters ul see runnin around .
