1964 f-100 351w vs 460
I have made a few post about my latest project , it's a 1964 f-100 step side , I been debating what enging to use 390 fe or 460 , my plans for the truck is a street /strip combo type deal , I guy i work with is asking my why not a 351w , is a very respected ford builder and racer , he toured some time with one of the big name monster truck crews serving as a head mechanic . So I take most of his advice to heart .he thanks the 351w will serve much better than the other two choices in my project and points out with all the after market support and used parts floating around for the 351w that I can get just as much out of the 351w as the other two with in my budget , I'd like to make between 450 to 500 hp at the flywheel . He believes a lighter less hp small block will do just as good as a larger he heavier big block on the track . I have my thoughts on it but would like to hear y'all's thoughts ,

I respectfully disagree w your friend.
your lil truck is gonna be kinda heavy and a bone stock 429/460 has the tq needed to get your truck moving. Plus its only a few hp away from your goals.
The best bang for your buck is a early 429-460 w :a mild cam aftrmarket intake/carb and a header swap to meet your 450+ hp goal.

X3 I have in my 69 F100 a 351w I built spent $2500 on and the 460 that I had in my Ranger when I built it I had about 2500 in it.The 460 had way more tq and power than the 351 has it is still in my F100.I am planning to freshen up the 460 and put it in my 69 now but if fuel mileage comes in to play on this build go with the 351w it will get better than the bbf will.

I agree with DirtWorker, and Falcon also. When you go to 500HP on a 351W it won't be very streetable or have the low end torque, that the 460 will. Gas mileage won't be good either.bbf-falcon wrote:I agree w/Dirt worker.

I'm new here but have had a number of different small and big block Ford engines and I would also have to say the 460 would be the best way to go they are stump pullers, tons of off the line torque in box stock form and with a few mods can bring HP easy in your range.

you could go with a 460 small block

I think cost will be a good factor here. A small block windsor can easily make this kind of power and be very reliable regardless of what others have said. The difference will be that the windsor will be considerably more expensive to build than the mild 460 it would take to make similar power. A 460 with ported stock heads will get you in this range but the windsor will need heads for sure plus a decent bottom end to do it.
Another consideration would be future expansion. A 460 will have room to go with heads and a bigger cam etc where as the windsors are limited by the stock block.

sbf vs bbf
There's no replacement for cubic displacement. You will be much happier with the 460. So much room for big h/p and torq. Find an old set of dove C heads with a 30 over stroker crank setup and you can push 500 h/p on pump gas
