$1000 to spend on an EFI 460 in a crew cab 4x4 F350
What's the best way to spend $1000 to wake up a nice-running-but-no-power 160k mile EFI 460? My first thoughts always go to carb, headers, and maybe a little cam. But I think I have to switch heads to get rid of the EFI (is that correct?). It's got great oil pressure and uses no oil, almost like someone has been through it once. Cracked exhaust manifold, so some sort of exhaust upgrade is on the horizon. Last flat tappet cam I tried to break in wiped out my old plow truck's 429, so I'm not SUPER excited about a cam swap, but I know that's a quick way to get some seat-of-the-pants help. How much cam can the EFI handle? I suppose some sort of roller cam would wipe out my budget altogether.
Any thoughts?

I had a 200k slug in my '96. Decided to pull and install at fresh oil pan, a hard to find set of Borlaug headers, and a Lunati flat tappet and springs chosen by Randy Malik. I broke it in on the old spring, and put another 40k mi on it before selling it to my Mother in laws boyfriend. Happy as hell for the mileage. Fuel consumption pretty much remained the same in town, picked up a solid 1-1.5mpg highway, no load. Towing was still terrible, but definetly more usable power. I also installed an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to crutch the weak injuctors. If it helped, I don't really know. But I was amazed how much quicker the engine would rev, and ran flawless with a stick PCM. From what I know, a "chip" may just advance timing, and I bumped mine to 13-14 and used it like so. If I kept te truck, I would've loved to have Randy port the heads and I'd out together a 9-9.5:1 466 deal. All of my mods I spoke of cost me around $1200, $450 being just for the headers.

Sounds like good ideas. Surprised there was so much EFI support! I don't dislike the driveability, for sure. Any idea how much cam I can use with those heads? I'll look into a little bigger objectors and investigate timers, etc. Almost scored a set of Banks headers for $100, but wasn't fast enough. Thanks for the input, guys!

I have spoken to a few guess running the EFI trucks that have seen some very good gains from
Adjustible Fuel pressure regulator
Cam change: EFI computer can take a good upgrade as long as teh LSA stays around 114 I believe
Bigger Throttle body
Opening up the exhaust.
I don't remember if the EFI engines had retarded timing chains or not, but something to consider if you go for the cam swap. You could probably get away with most of this for around 1000.00 in parts.... I don't remember them saying that they picked up mileage per say, but commented that pulling heavy loads they noticed a huge difference.
Good luck

I'm wondering if the TwEECer RT tuner is compatable with the 460 computer, that's what I want to get. Real time tuning on your laptop.
