460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
Hi guys,
Let me first start off with a run down of what I want to do and then I will go with questions after that.
This is my first 460 to date. I've built a couple 302s and a 352. I never messed with the rotating assemblies and none of which were boosted. I'm looking into purchasing a used 460 long block. From there, I'm dropping it into a 65 F100 short bed with a C6 and a 9" rear. I plan on boosting the 460 with twins. The top end will be whatever heads I can find on the cheap (probably ported stockies) a Victor intake and a blow through carb. Of course the headers are going to have to be custom made so I can squeeze all the "plumbing" into the engine compartment, but I was thinking 1.75" primaries. Again, my hp LIMIT will be 800 as that is as much as the trans is rated for. I would like to do this on the cheap. The truck will be just something to fart around with when I'm home. I'm going for more of the rat rod appeal. With that 800 hp limit in mind, here are my questions:
What block should I be looking for? a Lincoln 4v maybe?
What compression ratio would be best suited for my goal? I was thinking around 8.5.
Will this require a new forged crank or can I get away with just forged pistons and good connecting rods?
Will a high flow oil pump be able to support the engine and two turbos or will I have to run an auxiliary pump on the side?
have you guys run into any problems while trying to complete a similar build?
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!

Just my opinion, but I'd ditch the headaches of the turbo, and just build a solid 557" deal with a good set of SCJ's and make it pump gas friendly. It will be way more than the tires and chassis will be able to support and be way cheaper and easier to tune and more enjoyable in the long run.

Re: 460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
I see where you guys are coming from. However I already have a pair of T76 turbos to play with from when I traded one of my ARs during the first part of the gun rush. I figured I'd have a use for them sometime down the road. A 2200 dollar stroker kit and 1000/scj head, not to mention machining would put me way above a cheap turbo setup from what I've already got. I've owned and worked on quite a few turbocharged cars. I'm pretty decent with the ins and outs associated with the turbines them. I just haven't had to build an engine to suit them. It's always been the other way around. On another note, the f100 has a yukon diff with 14" mickey thompsons. It should hook decently for an old truck.

So your gonna build a twin turbo 460 for less than an outrageous $3200. Good luck. Keep us posted.

1) Any stock block will do if your looking to go cheap and should live OK at the level your looking at.
2) 8:1 or so should be fine IMO
3) Stock crank will live fine.
4) with the cost of recon ditioning stock stuff I'd just step up to a SCAT Hbeam.
5) IMO Forged pistons at the way to go. Probe has a decent priced dished replacement piston.
6) I'd think a HV pump would handle the twins.

Re: 460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
Unless you can do all the fabricating yourself, the plumbing that this project will require is probably going to cost more than the engine.
It sure would have a certain "WOW" factor though.

Re: 460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
I can do the plumbing myself no problem. I just have to make it all fit. The hood may get some notches or a cowl. Exhaust will be straight through the fenders dumped straight pipes from the hot sides. I got really good at mig welding when I built a jet turbine out of a Cummins VT-50 turbo earlier this year that runs on diesel. Everything was stainless steel to take the heat. Hopefully this truck will sound like the jet engine is under the hood.

Jasonf. Well no, maybe you misunderstood what I was getting at. Like I said. 2200 for a rotating assembly and 1000 per scj head plus whatever machining work will be adding up well into the 5k area. These prices are not inclusive of the block or any normal parts needed. If I can run the block with stock heads, stock crank, decent cam, and a victor intake. I could save myself a quite a chunk of change over an N/A setup. If I had to buy the turbos and the intercooler, thst would be a different story I think.

Re: 460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
Most people do not have the skills to fabricate what you are after, that is the reason for my original post. I think with a little shopping around for kits and heads, you would be able to do the big inch stroker for a lot less than the turbo deal, but now that I am aware of your fabricating skills, I say go for the turbo deal and keep us informed of the progress.

I forgot to mention that I'd be happy to run E85 seeing as it's widely available, not to mention cheaper, where I live.

Re: 460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
Seeing the low RPM that the thing should make the power your after and the budget theme of the build.
I'd look into getting a custom ground hydraulic flat tappet, noting fancy or exotic needed and it will be low maintence.

Re: 460 build with a 800HP limit HELP!
Is there any way you could sell off the turbo's are trade them for one large one? If you go carburated, make sure the throttle shafts are tight so you don't leak fuel, or totally box the carb, and add about 6-7 psi to your boost pressure, for your total fuel pressure. Use a good egt guage and start off fat with low timing. A BTM would be nice also. Turbo motors are easy to fry, just like nitrous motors, so be careful. Are you going to intercool it? I have seen one mid seventies truck singe turboed, it was a 460, and was not intercooled I believe. It did not look like it was too bad of a setup, or overly complicated, either. The other simple carbed set up was a SBC Corvette with a intercooler and a Holley carb. It ran 6.80's in the 1/8th mile with a 355, went to 383 FI in the 5.80's later. I would deffinetly do alot or research first, and talk to other people who have done one, first. If you lower your horse power goal some it should also be cheaper too, IE less expensive motor hard parts, and no intercooler. Sounds like a fun project.

As far as cams check this Crower #22978. It is an old Turbo Master cam and might not still be availabe, but was listed specifically for turbo's. 114 LS, Intake 278advertised, Exhaust 260advertized, .498" Intake, .464" Exhaust 214 I and 202 E at .050" Not a 800HP cam, but should give you some direction if you want to go bigger.
