I'll be using the Hornady Custom 300gr. XTP... Little much for deer, but should work great for elk, and just about anything else on the planet...

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
It should... I just started hunting a new place north of here, and along the river bottom gets frequented by Grizzly Bears as late as mid-late November...
So, it could come in quite handy...

Wish I had some of the scrap you had laying around my driveway. Nice rig, and a great caliber, for what your after. Might want to look into some of the Corbon loads also, but a 300gr. XTP is pretty tough.

What kind of "scrap" are you looking for? Everything's for sale, for the right price...supervel45 wrote:Wish I had some of the scrap you had laying around my driveway. I like the Hornady 300gr. loads in this pistol... I was shooting it yesterday "accurately" at a measured distance of 280 yds. This thing is impressive, to say the least...

I meant scrap to sell off, I would like a Freedom Arms 5 shot SA in this caliber. With that Leupold scope, its probably just getting warmed up at 280 yds., all though you can hit with it at these ranges, its power will be down compared to a rifle. Look up Elmer Keith, and see what he used to do with the 44mag. Do you use 45 Long Colt loads for casual practice? It will save on the wallet, as well as the wrist.

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
I am well aware of Elmer Keith and his accomplishments... I too have a few long range kills with handguns... One of which was a whitetail doe taken with a .357 Magnum from 185 yds. And a whitetail buck a week earlier with a .44 Magnum, taken from 326 yds. I have no doubt that this pistol will do the same with a bit more efficiency... I also have to my credit, a prairie dog taken with my .22 LR from a rangefound 402 yds!!
I don't have a problem with any type of long range shooting, nor do I condone such acts where those that buy or build their favorite super magnum firearm, or the flattest shooting bow on the market, only to think that just because they have it, it gives them the right to start slingin' lead or arrows at extreme distances without putting in the practice...
I spend 1000's of rds/year through my firearms & my bow, not for the sole purpose of long range hunting, but to give me the confidence should an occasion arise where it's now or never...

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
Have you read much of Ross Seyfrieds Writtings on the Magnum Sixgun developement? Guns and Ammo magazine just is not the same since Keith passed away back in 1984. Ross did keep it interesting with his work with the 475 and 500's and kind of carried on with what Elmer had started, along with Lee Jurras, Bowen, and a few others. His exploits with a handgun in Africa were crazy, but he survived, and lived to write about it. Anyway good shooting, and congrats on the Ruger.

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
I haven't read any of those mags in years, but I did enjoy Ross Seyfried's writings when I was reading them... I was drawn away from most of those mags after Elmer Keith's passing, and also that of Bob Milek... Now, I pretty much do my own thing with rifles, and pistols and such, along with archery. I build my own rifles with the use of my friend's lathe, and do all of my own load development. And I also do handloads for others' rifles as well... Just gets me more shootin time that way... Shoot, I haven't fired a factory round in years through a rifle... I just enjoy it, and it's a great hobby...

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
I miss Bob Milek also, I believe he passed in 1994, but can't remember for sure, learned alot from him. Garry James is about all that is left of the old crew, and I don't keep up with it anymore, since Peterson Publishing sold the mag. I used to shoot the 100-200 light varmit matches over at American, in Houston, until they moved to Tomball Tx. and after a few drives over that far, got out. You may have heard of Jackie Schmitt, if you build your own, he is one of the top shooters around here, and I believe he visits Precision Shooters.com and some of the other beechrest sites, if you ever look at them. Until ammo prices come down, I am not going to shoot much anymore, and reloading does cut the cost, but it is still high. Ross once wrote an article for G&A on a 1" 100yard handgun, and he used a hot loaded 45 Colt Custom Revoler, with a scope and cast lead bullets. He did get a 1" group after experimenting a bit. It was a very good article. I have always liked the Hot 45Colt and 454's because they make more power than the 44, at the same or slightly lower pressure. The 460 S&W is just a little crazy, like almost 70K chamber pressure, and gain twist to keep the bullets together. It will probably go the way of the 357 Maximum, as even Milek said, was too much.

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
That's one of the only things I haven't done, is any type of competetive shooting... I guess as much as I compete with myself while shooting/hunting, that's enough for me... LOL!!
I don't shoot near as much as I used to, due to the cost of everything anymore... Too bad you're so far away from here, I'd like to have another shooting partner...

Re: Got me a new toy ...............
Yes it is to bad, probably would hit the track too. It's hard over here to find anyone with the time or the money, same way with going to the racetrack. Competive shooting, is about like competive racing, fun to do for a while, but can take the fun away, and get expensive quick. You should post up a good group from the 454. All you need now is one of the lever action rifles in 454, that they are now making, and you will have a nice two gun set that shares caliber. 454 in a 16-20" rifle is not all that for behind 45-70 Government. Have you looked at any of them? If Marlin would make one, it would be nice, but I don't think they do yet?
