How Good is a C6 for Heads Up Drag Racing
I am looking for some info on how much power someone has put through a C6 trans. and if it is good enough to use in a heads up class. I have used C6 transmissions braket racing for a while. My new combo will have alot more power and also be a heads up class. Everyone in the class runs powerglides, and most all have chevy engines. I can see where the powerglide might have some advantages, but I am a Ford guy to the core and would like to run the C6. I have heard reasons ranging from the C6 it too heavy, C6 has more reciprocating weight, you can't cut good enough lights to run in a heads up class with a C6, it's easier to get a converter thats right for a powerglide, well, you get the idea. I have a small block ford that will be in the 1100-1200 hp. range on nitrous. It will be in a 25.1e car weighing around 2300 lbs. I am going to try and run in the ORSCA 5.0 class. Just wanting to know if the C6 can handle that much power and be reliable. I see where Frank Merkl has a car running 7.60's @ 186, so I would love to hear his opinion as well as everyone elses. I just don't want to run a powerglide if I don't have to. But, if that is what it takes to be competetive, I guess I might consider it.
Thanks,
Chris

You can run whatever tire you want. I am running a 33x15x15. There is basically no rules other than it has to be a door slammer car, no throttle stop, no electronic bracket racing aids, and car and driver must meet all safety requirements.

Frank's performance speaks for itself, if you have a problem with GM stuff which at this point the whole tranny will need to be aftermarket anyway, then I rekon the C6 done like Frank's would be fine.
Not that there is anything wrong with the 2 speed, given the tire size I dont see where a 3 speed would be a problem...........
Clear as mud lol.

most of the Monster Trucks run c6 transmissions and they make alot more hp than 1200, i think the only drawback is the weight and mass, if you notice alot of the faster gm guys have went to the Turbo 400 in outlaw 10.5 for durability and consisitancy with less breakage than a glide.

Re: How Good is a C6 for Heads Up Drag Racing
I have two C6 transmissions and you are right, they are some heavy muthers. With my car being somewhat light, I think I can just add more nitrous to the mix to overcome the weight difference between the C6 and the glide. I shouldn't need all 1200hp to run 5.0. I am thinking I will be close with 1000hp. What are some things that people are doing to the C6 to make it live over a 1000hp?

My transmission was built by Dynamic Racing Transmission and has an Ultimate Converter Concepts Conveter it has lived this season. 5.60 1/8 mile and 8.90 1/4 mile times with a 3150 pound car. guess i was lucky, call Harold at Dynamic he will fix you up or let you know who you need to call

Thanks. Alot of good information on that site. I see Frank is a member there. I will have to get in touch with him as I have alot of questions about building the C6 to handle 1100-1200hp.

For a 1/4 mile app, tall gear, tall tire, lotta motor and a poweradder the C6 done per Frank M is gonna be the right path, something about the gearing for the big mph likes that low 1st gear and 2 gear changes.

Car will be an 1/8 mile car only. Currently the car has 4.86 gears, but have a 4.57 and a 5.00 set if it needs it. Not sure which gear it will like. The cam and induction system were designed for around 8000-8300 rpms.
I live in Covington, Ga. Plan on racing this car with ORSCA in their 5.0 class. In the past I have raced at Jackson,SC., Eatonton,GA., Atlanta Dragway, Phenix City,Al., and Macon National Dragway

Macon was sold a while back and the new owners have spent alot of money there. It is much nicer now. I have been to SGMP twice with a friend, but I have not race any of my cars there.

I ran a C4 one time in a bracket car. I had a friend who was running a 400 ci small block with a C4 and it did quite well. When I ran my first big block with a C6 in a heavy car, I was hooked on the C6. It's a BRUTE.

Re: How Good is a C6 for Heads Up Drag Racing
i have a man that builds mine and in 5 years i never even checked the fluid plus any body around here that know him will tell you he is the c-4 king he also does my glide too and the $ cant be any better
nobody that i know of that has has a c-4 built by him has never busted it or had any trouble plus the man does my conv. the best around
i pick up 4.5 tenths in the 1/8 from one builder to him. every body that runs a bbf around here that is got any power runs his trans.
i have been friends with him for over 17 years and never have any trouble with anything

Re: How Good is a C6 for Heads Up Drag Racing
I don't run heads up I bracket race and just switched to a glide full JW case bell & tail housing. I was surprised when I weighed the C6 and then the glide and there was only ten pounds difference. The glide did not have any fliud in it but I would have thought it would have been aleast 40lbs. If you can hook it stay with the C6 go full roller. JMHO

Re: How Good is a C6 for Heads Up Drag Racing
I should have no problems getting the car to hook. The last combo that was in the car was a 598 ci BBF all motor with a 4 speed Lenco. You could launch at 7500 rpms and cut 1.14 60 ft's. I plan on talking with Frank Merkl on a few things and I do want to go full roller.
Macon is 1/8 mile. They installed concrete walls all the way down the track, and expanded the parking area, and even paved a good bit in the pits. New concessions, bathrooms and stands.
