max rpm on stock D1VE engine????

What is the max rpm you would run a stock lowerend of a 460, D1VE engine???? mud racing is what i'm doing wide open for 10sec or less

It would depend upon how many passes you would need it to last.   

40 passes, and its an old used lower end

5500-6000 if it's in good working order

i've had a couple 460's.. newer ones.. 87-91 motors. that the pistons break apart...

i'm going to set the rev limiter at 4700.....
i'm thinking the older stuff is better.......

Don't know about the newer pistons. My 429 has D1 short bock with stock pistons and a mildish grind hyd. cam. The bottom end and pistons worked fine in 1/8 drag racing, with 150 shot of N20 for quite a while at 5,500 rpm. It would most likely still be going, if I had not dropped a valve. At least if the bottom end goes you are out of less money. I was impressed with the stock parts.

6500 is more like it. We run them a lot higher

what pistons are you running?? I've had 3 motors where the wrist pin is connected to the rod and rod is fine and piston is blown apart.. (i had O.E. stock pistons)

and having something that's not wore out in the wrong places.

6200 is where I found the limit on stock rods

I ran the stock 89 model fuel injection pistons until swapping to the cheap speed pro flat top to bump the c/r up some the engine is still running or was when I pulled it and built my 552 the 460 is sitting on a engine stand and ready to be put in something one day

Know of a 429 run in a 58 Edsel in the late 1960's. Cam, upgraded valvetrain, homemade TR, stock bottom end saw 8,200 rpm more than once... cast pistons tend to break off the skirts after awhile...
