shooters step inside ...SW XVR 460
anyone own a xvr 460 ? how do ya like it ?
im looking at buying one to use hunting in northern maine (family owns camp/land up there)
i just sold my 44 mag ruger super redhawk to my brother . This gun did anything i needed on whitetail or black bear . I just more or less want a new toy to use and reload with .
Some preach just go with the Sw 500 but to me ... from what i have read the 500 drops off after 100 yards quick and the 460 200-175 grain bullets fly flat to 200 yards ...i dont get caught in the whole bigger is always better lol
460 has a Gain twist barrel ...500 doesnt , i have heard mixed reviews on if it even matters that much but i figuare they did it for a reason .
I have bagged dear up in maine on the bog we hunt as close as 30 yards and as far as 150 yards . Im sure either one will work .
Any first hand opinions one either 460 or 500 ......and i have shot my buddys 500 a handfull of times shoots nice as well.
I have a marlin 45/70 lever , Rem 700 35 whelen i can use up there as well , i just want another hand gun .
Thanks

I would stay away from it myself. It runs at 60k Plus chamber pressure and S&W used gain twist rifleing to keep the bullets together. A 454 is not far behind and makes more sense to me in a handgun. The 500 make more power if you really need it I think, and I would go that route. I guess you can shoot 454 loads in the 460, but then you get more bullet jump to the rifleing, which does not help accuracy. The 460 reminds me of the old 357 Maximum, which was too much of a good thing and ate up forcing cones and cut top staps, so Ruger gave up on it and Dan Wesson gave two barrels with theirs to keep customers happy.

see now shooting the 460 , 500 ..i found in the 8 3/8 barrel that the recoil in the 500 a was hair more but nothing that was any huge difference . what i did find with the 500 is the precussion (spelling maybe wrong) was crazy . At the outdoor range people walk over just to see what the hell went off ...speaking of my buddys gun here .

Re: shooters step inside ...SW XVR 460
The 500 I shot with the full house 440 grainers was rediculus. Too much for me and the guns are to big for packing along with a rifle. The Freedom arms in 454 Casull with a 6-71/2 barrel would be all I would care for and a decent step up from the 44's. I played with all the overbore rifle stuff when it was the craze and reloaded for them as well. The flat shooting and low wind drift characteristics were my reasons also. It was fun and all, but the benifits where not all that, as was touted by the manufaturer's, in the field. The drawsbacks where many. Try the 460, and if you don't like, trade it for something else, I guess is the only way to really know if you like it. Bullet placement is everthing, especially with a handgun. Next is bullet construction in my book. Hard Cast Lead for the big tough animals really works, high velocity not so much. You will have to use hold over at long ranges with all of them.http://www.handloads.com/calc/ Might want to plug two in here and see what they look like at 200yds.

http://www.handloads.com/calc/ I got it to link. Check the impact velocities on the light fast bullets at 200yds. it is an eye openor.

Re: shooters step inside ...SW XVR 460
i may go with the 460 like stated
i think theres more options with it overall what you can do with it , loads and obviously distance ect
it will come down to what i can find . Im looking to buy second hand these guns 460 & 500 should be in very good shape with not a ton of rounds through them assuming and not pay the full new price

this is what i was told about the "gain twist in the 460" from smith and wesson forum ...pretty similar to what you said in here
quote below
they mainly do it so the bullet will engage the rifling otherwise it would strip and there would be no accuracy.
it also helps to maintian the rounds velocity as when the bullet starts turning it wastes forward speed to spin it.

The 460 makes more sense in a Contender, esp. with a 14" barrel, than a revolver. It should be more efficient than the 45-70 for sure.dfree383 wrote:I've been thinking about getting a .460 s&w barrel for my contender.

Re: shooters step inside ...SW XVR 460
It also helps lower chamber pressure (and spikes) and lets the rifleing engage slower to prevent it from stripping the engagement, with long bullets. It was first used in a 6.5mm military rifle (Carcano I believe) with long bullets for these reasons, and S&W brought it back for the same. The first .264 Win. Maga. (6.5mm) used a banded bullet to help with the same issue's when it came out in 1959. Did you run any of the loads and compare the impact velocities at 200yds? http://www.ballistics101.com/460_sw.php5pointslow wrote:this is what i was told about the "gain twist in the 460" from smith and wesson forum ...pretty similar to what you said in here

Re: shooters step inside ...SW XVR 460
Here ar some 460 and 500 S&W loads. At 200 yds a 200gr bullet at 2,200fps MV impacts at 1161fps with -17.8" drop with a 50 yd zero. It hits a little harder than a 45ACP+P would at the muzzle. The 500 will put 350grs. on target at 1152fps at the same range with -22.8" drop if it starts out at 1,800fps. The 500 has about 5" more drop than the 460, but 150grs less lead, and about the same velocity at impact. These are not actual loads listed in the links, but generic representations of the average loads between the two calibers.

I think packing these big ass pistols are a joke! I'll keep my grenades and when I find a deer standing around I'll throw a grenade his way. It may not kill him but while he's cleaning his ass of shit I'll knock him in the head with my ball bat!... ...
