best oil temp for drag racing
Now that I've got an oil temp gauge I've noticed this. My engine runs around 190 water temp, the oil takes a long time to warm up.
It seems like it takes forever to get to 140, then if I drive it enough it will eventually get to around 180.
I have been running my car at the track by warming it up to about 180 degrees water temp, but now I know my oil would be cold.
Do I run the car until the oil is warmer or just go by the water temp?
I currently run Mobil 1 15-50 synthetic which has 1200 parts zddp.
I have around 62 psi oil pressure, which goes down to around 50 psi at idle when warmed up.
I run a Ford high volume pump and a 7 qt pan.

Good question... I'd also like to know, subscribing...
I always drive through the pits a few laps to warm up the engine and drivetrain. Then when we are called to the lanes I'll warm my engine up in the lanes up to 180+ before shutting it down. Now this last race it was COLD!!! and It took FOREVER to get heat into the engine...
I try to run the car at 190-200F

I have one of the stick on heating pads on my oilpan, its pluuged in all the time.............only when I leave the pit is it not in use. Now this is an alky deal, and prolly one reason i can go so long on the oil change intervals, hell I change it once mid season and thats it.
I have a heater in the radiator, may add some to the block this winter though, also one on the diff as it takes forever to warm up.

I shoot for 180 Oil Temp.
I usually try to get my oil temp up to 180 degrees before making a pass. My water temperature takes longer to come up though. I'll usually hit 180 oil temp and my water may only be at around 160. I run Mobil 1 15W-50 Synthetic. At the winter tech seminar Adney Brown brought a sheet that gave recomended oil temperatures for different types of oil. I think thats where I came up with the 180 degree number.

i know my fastest passes are when the water temp is 180+ ....... off the trailer the first pass is usually 140-150

when i was on the dyno last year the oil temp didnt come up that fast.mike philips asked me if i had a oil restrictor in the block and i said no,he said that is the reason the oil temp dosent rise that fast.he said i would have to warm up the motor alittle longer but wasnt a problem i dont recall what he said the oil temp should be though.
water temp on the dyno started at 165 and ended at 175.oil temp started 170 and ended at 180.
