np205
How strong is a mid 70s np205? Wondering about a pulling truck application. 35"tires 485"iron head class.

Depending upon how much cowbell you are making, they need a few to a lot of parts to live. But that is the strongest factory case made.

Re: np205
I've see a lot of broken parts at the track. only once did I see a 205 hurt, and they are the standard for a good rig

Strong
The only ones I've ever seen break were from bad drivers ( bouncing and held it wide open or dumping the clutch from lack of clutch). Two of my friends pull 4x4 and are both over 4-5 seasons old with the original np205s.

Re: np205
I have a 74? I think 3/4 ton.dana 60 rear, 44 closed knuckle front.I'm told the front must go or it'll get broke. The class is a prostreet deal.485"oem heads, oem drive line meaning no profab case.35"street tires.how much cow bell is unknown for now but a solid 800hp should put me in the game.I know it'll take rpm to get that much out of a 485 but best I can tell rpm and sled pulling go together. Lol

Re: np205
Pro-Fab makes a nice kit for these but limited to 4lo, Cory Keck out of Pa makes a nice kit also with a choice different gears being offered. Kecks kit can be used in 4lo and limit 2wd for around pits etc. They will never know you have a profab or the other kit inside the case

I would be more worried about the 44 and the 60 than the transfer case. in my opinion u will be running a dana 70 or 80 in the rear and atleast a 60 up front. Its cheaper to put a bigger differential in than to try and strengthen the weaker 60 in the rear.

Re: np205
I've been doing some research and found that the 2005 f250 I drive has a 60 front.now I'm leaning toward a superduty to build on.I found a 04 gas burner 6spd for $3600.I just wonder what kinda weight the newer truck is.

Re: np205
I missed that , jesse has a good point just put a 80 in the rear and 60 in the front. May want to put 70 outers in the 60. If you go with the newer frame get the 271 case and you will not have to worry about the 205. The 271 is a strong case.

Anything you get from Cory will be top shelf! I just wish he had this stuff available when I was still pulling. I tried to make a stock 205 live behind a 700 horse motor and kept popping the rear c clip off and loosing rear wheel drive. Then I went to the profab kit and never had another problem with an 800+ motor.
In stock form, the 1356 is actually stronger than the 205, but the 205 has the better Iron case.
Re: np205
Thanks for all the info everyone. Now i need to decide if I want to jump in this or not. Lol

You can have the best stuff imaginable and track conditions suck and still break stuff. It is as a fun "hobby" and if you start you may not wanna stop. Just don't look back at the money spent or you will wonder why it took so much to get to a certain point. I ask a lot of questions on the pulling forums and guys are pretty honest about what works and what doesn't. But it is a pretty secretive sport just like any other motor sport. And somebody always has more money or knowledge.

yes I've figured out already to not believe much you hear from the competition. Lol I may just keep my eye open for a roller and skip the building experience. I know i can build one I just don't have the hankering for that stuff like i did in my younger days.460pulling wrote:You can have the best stuff imaginable and track conditions suck and still break stuff. Re: np205
Check the weight on the late model super duties, the frames are stiff and they can be heavy but like anything, you can shave alot of weight if you want to. Also, Im not sure what class you are thinking about, but for altered/super stock you had better be in the 850-900hp range and have a motor that will turn up to 9 grand if you want to be competitive. With the 485 pro stock class, you need north of 950 to be competitive and still turn it up to 9000 revs

Re: np205
the weight is a concern with the newer sd truck.with the rules as they are it may be hard to get one down enough to make the weight. the prostock class is what i'm looking at but they have another local bunch working on a "hot gas"class.its more "stock"than anything but the rules are VERY open.right now as they are i could put my 605 in a "stock"truck and run it.i hate to build anything for a class that will soon see a big set of rules.lol....thats why i wanted to know about the np205 becouse i have lots of 500"+ parts and a new set of A460's i need to put to use.HorsinAround wrote:Check the weight on the late model super duties, the frames are stiff and they can be heavy but like anything, you can shave alot of weight if you want to.
