1958 Ford Fairlane 500... 429? will it fit?
I have a 1958 Fairlane 500 Interceptor (352 4v). The engine is rusted and wont turn over; the carb is corroded beyond repair. I have an opportunity to buy a 1972 429 (rumored to be a Police Interceptor) and was wondering if it would easily fit and if someone sells motor mounts and such for the conversion. Otherwise I would make my own mounts without a problem since I have a machine shop. If not a 429 then perhaps a 4.6 (police interceptor) or 5.4 EFI unit. Any help/advice/experience on the 429/'58 Fairlane question would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's actually a great engine choice for the 58.A C6 tranny for a 351/400M or 429/460 will mount right in, and your stock 429/460 exh. manifolds may be the right ones also. As far as engine mounts,i'm not sure which ones you might need, but i'm sure someone on here can lead you in the right direction on the mounts.

Unfortunately, back in 73 when I got my 58..I had a 427 with factory rubber side engine mounts. When I swapped to a 460, I made some simple solid mounts from rectangular tubing. It will be simple to fabricate some plates to adapt a rubber 460 passenger car mount to the 58 frame.
Oh...just thought...I have a buddy that did the swap for street...I will ask him.
C-6 bolts right on to the trans crossmember.
Not sure about manifolds, but I think there is no problem.

Crites sells mounts, crossmember, and headers to put a 460 in a '58 Fairlane as well as some other neat stuff.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think I am going to make a go of it. You Only Live Once! If it is a Police Interceptor I will leave it as is. If it is not then I will likely turbo charge it. It will be a classy Rat Rod for quite some time as it evolves. I believe in daily (or at least weekly) drivers. Rust in the usual places, but that's what I work on anyways so no biggie. Thanks again.

I ordered the swap kit for my 56 from Crites and they build as you order so expect to wait 4-6 weeks. Not a big deal to me but some people expect 24 hour service.
I imagine it will be something similar to this.

Ford Power Train also has headers available but hey are only 1 3/4". They are goofy looking to me but I guess it depends on your motor and expectations.

The pics below were for a 56. You can call or email them and they probably have some pics they can send you.
I believe the FPA headers also work with Wurthits rack and pinion swap if that is in your future.

If you don't go the header route manifolds from a 77 F150 clear everything and you can use the F150 y pipe to construct the exhaust. A little tricky fabing it up to clear the pitman arm travel but works good.

All i can say is when i met Keith up at New england dragway at the hot rod reunion , after talking to him with my old man about his car . I really didnt know much about the 58 due to not seeing them at all drags, or street cars atleast in my neck of the woods . Keith knows his stuff and im sure knows the car inside and out i wouldnt hesitate to call him and chat about your project .

Re: 1958 Ford Fairlane 500... 429? will it fit?
So. I went to look at the 429 today and got some pictures. I am a little baffled in trying to decipher what I may have. I haven't purchased the engine yet but I am still trying to determine what I am getting into. He said that his brother got it right out of a 1972 police car (perhaps not an interceptor police car...?)
The rear bores are ever-so-slightly larger than the front.
I cannot send the photos. Too big. the carb has no markings at all. The rear two ports are ever-so-slightly larger than the front. I have never seen one like it has neither has the owner. The casting right above the exhaust port says D2VEAA. Can anyone help with what this would actually be?
If you want photos I can email them. Thanks.

They fit great, my dad just bought, and I mean just bought, he picked it up just the other day, a '56 Victoria Street rod, he was told it had a 428 FE, but once we looked at it, it actually has a 460, much better IMO. It fits like it was made to be in there.

Not a PI engine. Is just a run of the mill 1972 429 or 460 (if it was in a Lincoln). The D2VE heads give it away. Those are the only open chamber BBF heads and used for one year only, 1972 as they are detonation prone.
