help with geardrive for my 460!
Guys I was looking on ebay at the different gear drives and noticed there are some with the center hole and dowel pin and others with 3 holes and a dowel pin. Is there a way of knowing with out tear down so I can go ahead and order? I do know my cam is a small rv style cam and its a later 70s engine with D3 heads. Its driving me bonkers not knowing what cam exactly is in there for tuning. My truck is heavy with 3.54s and c6 and would like better fuel mileage but unsure if 8mpg is ok with my setup. Also running around a 31-32" tire so nothing crazy there.

Forget the gear drive stuff and just put a good early style straight up chain and gear set in it. You will be a lot happier.

my gear set is the early one set strait up! I have had 2 gear drives and love the whine. What is the negative in using the gear drives?

The gear drive is not needed unless your making big power.
Harmonics is the main reason the 3 hole gear drives advance at the cam its self as opposed to the crank.

Gear drives are not needed at any power level.
Get a good chain.

I've seen a ton of N/A and Nitrous engines making well over 1250 HP and not a single one of them had a gear drive.gmsmkr wrote:The gear drive is not needed unless your making big power.

Im not understanding yall I guess. What is the disadvantages of the gear drive? does it use more power to run it over a chain?

There is no reason to spend big dollars on a gear drive that is noisy and transfers a lot of bad harmonics when a simple cheap chain and gear set up works so well.

I guarantee Kasse and Sonny don't put them on their engines either.gmsmkr wrote:schmitty wrote:I've seen a ton of N/A and Nitrous engines making well over 1250 HP and not a single one of them had a gear drive.gmsmkr wrote:The gear drive is not needed unless your making big power.

You are more than welcome to spend your money as you wish, but you will be doing yourself a disservice by putting one in your engine.

Now we're stepping into the latest century as far as high performance engine technology.gmsmkr wrote:schmitty wrote:I guarantee Kasse and Sonny don't put them on their engines either.gmsmkr wrote:schmitty wrote:I've seen a ton of N/A and Nitrous engines making well over 1250 HP and not a single one of them had a gear drive.gmsmkr wrote:The gear drive is not needed unless your making big power.

just trying to learn... So the harmonics cause timing issues?

IMO I wouldn't run a cheap Chinese part in that position in anything I put together.greg_a_morton wrote:There $50 to $100 now.
The gear drive stuff for that money is not very good. Poor materials, machining and fitment.
A quality $90 billet chain with a German chain is a much better choice.

If that's what you like, for the noise run it............ I have ran them years ago and they ran fine, but I'm like the other guys, a good chain set up is what I run. There will be some harmonics that could cause spark scatter and valve train harmonics, but I doubt with what your running it will be noticeable.
Carry on...........

Re: help with geardrive for my 460!
The OP sounds a lot like me!
I want to run Interco Boggers on my truck just so people can hear them coming 4 miles down the road! LOL I have thought about the gear drive as a super cheap "roots blower". If the OP just like to hear a whine it would be his cheapest option! Heck, I know a lot of my friends that run blown alcohol setups, that like to run them fat just so spectators move away and it hunts rpm!

A three gear setup is much better than a four gear.
