Snakebit
Yesterday's weather prediction was for rain today...but it looks like it'll be clear enough for a big day at the track. A ProMod Big Dawg shootout, a Big Tire shootout, a Small Tire shootout, 6.0 index, 7.0 index and crotch cars. Gonna be a packed house.
So I moved the car from the garage to load up...and there's big ol' puddle of gear oil under the 9". Why me, Lord?

Should be a easy fix Kim. I usually either use oil dry if there's alot,if not i use a rag then clean the floor w/brake cleaner.

That's no joke right there. I split a trans cooler line in the Ranger once...I took Mr. Toadie's wild ride and ruined my shorts.. I also noticed my popularity had suffered a bit when I got back to the pits. Who knew oiling the track was uncool??

I rode by the track on my way back from Mobile tonight. The place is packed from fence to fence and lit up like Disney World. Hate missing that one.

Re: Snakebit
maybe its a pinion seal so you can fix it easy.it could be like my trans yoke....sob wont leak unless it sets a few months. it never did that before so i guess i should get it to the track more often!

True I had a oil line come off the 460 on top end One thing if I find a oil leak I load mine up I don't want to wreck mine an don't want to be the cause someone to wreck and mess up their ride because I put oil on the track. It easier to fix a oil leak than have to fix the oil leak and the truck from keep on running it with the oil leak.

Simpler than that. The bottom of the housing, the carrier to mounting flange, the pinion support and the pinion seal are all as dry as toast. I crawl around, looking, feeling for something slippery (sounds dirty, eh?). The only place there's oil is INSIDE the center of the pinion yoke. Apparently it's wicking oil along the splines. Pinion nut is still as tight as Dick's hat band. I never had one leak there before ...maybe it's a little overfilled? BTW, this is a Fab9 housing and a Strange aluminum carrier. What do you guys think?
This pisses me off no end, as I missed a helluva race for this.
And who the hell is this "Dick" guy, and how come he never learned how to buy the right hat?

Just to reassure myself that there's no problem, what do you guys think? I've been running 9" rears for decacdes and this is the first one to leak from behind the pinion nut. Common? Not so common? Overfilled?

I've felt with this before. Silicon is the answer. Might want drop the pub level a bit. 1 quart is plenty to race with.

Yep. I figured as much. I'm gonna drain a little out. Been running 2 quarts. Thanks, Ward.
