Are you folks using TH400 or 4L80E trannys behind 429-460 BBFs?

My understanding is racing generally involves a two speed tranny but in terms of a street strip car wouldn't a TH400 or a 4L80E be better.

Why would they be better? A rollerized C6 is darn tough to beat(I'm putting 1000 lbs of torque through mine), and if you need O/D, an A4OD can be made pretty tough, and you don't need a crossbreed converter or adapter plate.Dark Horse of Apocalypse wrote:My understanding is racing generally involves a two speed tranny but in terms of a street strip car wouldn't a TH400 or a 4L80E be better.

I guess that depends on how badly you think you need that low first gear. Any self respecting BBF has no trouble getting a car moving....in ANY gear. As long as you're not using a stock type converter, it WILL NOT hook on the street, and more low gear multiplication ain't gonna help. A stock 1.76 first gear powerglide will probably fry the hides with a tap on the throttle. That leaves out the TH400 IMO, because high gear is 1 to 1, just like the 'glide, so you gain nothing there.
For me, the question then becomes, "Do I need overdrive or not?" If it's a highway car, use the OD of your choice. If it's a town cruiser/track car.....powerglide.
Simple, effective, lightweight, tough, parts are evreywhere, my sister could overhaul one in an afternoon, makes a better track car, can be built to handle power levels from wimpy to "OMIGOD".............

Thank you all once again as I was under the mistaken impression I needed a 3 speed or 3X2 with a Gear Venders setup for a Street/Strip car. I guess the Ford I will own won't have Chebby part #s.

I run a FORD C6 , Toughest trans out there!!! 200 Passes without changing clutches @ 2500hp , rollerized its almost bullet proof, front planetary needs to be changed out ever 100 passes as it takes a beating from tire shake as it kills the needles on the pinion gears . and this is a 2800Lb car with a 632 C headed BBF with 2 big stages of GO Juice!!!!

There's no doubt, Frank builds the baddest C6's around if you're inclined to go that way.

Re: Are You Folks Using?
The only thing the turbo 400 has going for it is weight. I looked into using one and the builder was adamant about not using 1st for burn-outs or down shifting the trans at high mph.

A good 460 with a C-6 and the correct converter won't hook on the street with a 2.78 rear gear.
