Detroit named the engines by number of cylinders and then cubes per cylinder. They had 53, 71, and 92 cube versions in 2-16 cylinder arrangements. Most were V style, but they did make 4 and 6 cylinder inlines too.

That's what I thought, ive always just referred to them as 71 because I can't tell the difference between them unless someone tells me.

All I can remember from my childhood is all the logging skidders ran them and none of them had any type of muffler! You would be out in the middle of the woods and hear one crank-up miles away. Aka: Scream'n Demon

A 6-71 was an INLINE 6 cylinder.

Yep, forgot about the 3 cylinder deals. I've seen a 6-53 inline, but not the 71 cube version, and the 318 Detroit was the only one that I've seen that was named by rated HP. It was a turbo charged 8V71.

The 71 series has the most variety. 1,2,3,4,6,6v,8v,12v,16v,24v. 53 series has 2,3,4,6v,8v. 92 has 6v,8v,12v,16v,24v. Then there was a 6-110. Then you go to the 149 series. 
As far as being called by hp, there's the 238 which is a 6-71, where the original blowers came from. Then the 318 which is a 8v71. Then the 8v92's where always called by hp, 430's , 450's and 475s. It's funny that 6-71 were used in trucks, but 6v71's were equipment engines. They may have put a few in fire trucks, but I've never seen one. Wes
